Tips To Buying Cheap Furniture ? Home ? globaldailychronicle.com

cheap vintage furniture

You should realize that low cost bathroom furniture can be every bit great in terms of high quality as the truly high-priced ranges. The lower priced brand of bathroom cabinets may just not be as well recognized and thus the cost reflects this, but think back it might well last as lengthy if not longer. Also, furniture which goes out of style is frequently traded at lower prices than the on going market expenses. Even So, it is essential that we take a look at such furniture truly nicely before you go for the killing.

Prices for genuine Shaker furniture tend to be high. But if you prefer your furniture to last for years, then your best choice is to go and find a genuine coffee table in this style. But if you change up your decor every so often, or if you don?t know if this is the right piece for you, or if you just don?t have the money for a real table in the style, do not worry ? there are still options.

This generation believes that simplicity expresses elegance. Therefore they not only choose sleeker furniture but also want them to be straightforward. Standard furnishings has delicate carving all more than it whereas the contemporary genre furnishings comply with straightforward styles comprising plain geometric structures and modest colors.

If you have a liking for modern styles, then modern furniture can truly add to your life style quotient. Though it is an individual alternative, but you must also take in account that this furniture not only enhances the presentation of your space, but also represents your taste and preferences to the guests. Choosing the right sort of furnishings will fetch you compliments.

The best way to stay stylish is to invest in some high quality vintage furniture ? and here?s eight great reasons that it?s better than attempting to follow the trend.

Before you purchase modern furniture in Los Angeles, there are some key features you should seek out while browsing stores. You?ll find various types of contemporary furniture in Los Angeles, from Italian bedroom furniture to modern sofas and chairs. Make quality a priority because you?ll likely keep your furniture for many years.

Shaker style furniture was first becoming popular at around the mid-1800s. Ever since, other furniture makers have constructed pieces that are similar and have elements of the style. These pieces include bookcases, chairs, coffee tables, and cupboards. If you are in love with this style but cannot afford to buy a genuine Shaker style rustic coffee table, then you still have purchasing options for pieces that are very similar but lower priced.

When buying a modern sofa and other furniture, it is important to consider the amount of space that you have in your home. You have to measure the space that is available in your home. But now sofas varies in shape and sizes so even if you have the smallest room in your home there is a sofa that will surely fit in that room.

Buying furniture is an important phase of home life; get the wrong one and you?re saddled with it for the rest of your life ? or sell it off to buy a new one. This is just one of the reasons why you should take special care in buying modern furniture as a home improvement project for your home.

Do not buy vintage baby cribs. Do not buy authentic vintage baby cribs or cradles. Safety standards have enhanced considerably through the years. Old baby cribs may have lead fresh paint, splintering wood, and wrongly measured slats. You could select a ?retro? reproduction that?s fashioned with both style and safety in your mind.

But no matter where you buy furniture online, make sure the seller is reputable to avoid scams.

N.Korea warns of more rain after deadly floods

North Korea warned that more rainstorms will hit the country's north and western coastal regions this week, after recent flooding killed 88 people and left tens of thousands homeless.

Heavy rains are expected in most parts of the country on Sunday and Monday, state-run KCNA said, particularly warning of downpours set to deluge the west coast and the northern province of Jagang.

"In the period there will be rainfalls of 100-150 millimetres (5.9 inches) or more than 200 millimetres in some areas," KCNA said, citing a forecast by the country's weather service.

The warning comes a day after the North said that deadly floods which started on July 18 had left 88 dead, injured 134, made almost 63,000 people homeless and destroyed swathes of farmland.

More than 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) of crop fields were "washed away" or submerged, with roads and factories destroyed, KCNA said Saturday, in a blow for the state which has long been beset by persistent severe food shortages.

After decades of deforestation the impoverished North is particularly vulnerable to flooding.

Dozens were killed or injured by a storm and torrential rains in June and July last year, which left thousands homeless and large areas of farmland flooded.

With rugged terrain and outmoded agricultural practices, the communist state faces serious difficulties in feeding its 24 million people. Hundreds of thousands died during a famine in the mid to late 1990s.

Following a visit to the country, UN agencies estimated last November that three million people would need food aid in 2012.

The United States reached a deal in February this year to offer the North much-needed food in return for a freeze on nuclear and missile tests.

But the plan was scrapped after Pyongyang's failed rocket launch in April, seen by the US and its allies as an attempted ballistic missile test banned under UN resolutions.

Demarquette luxury chocolates included in Great Taste Top 50 ...

We are very proud that our Imperial China chocolate has been named as one of the Top 50 Foods within the UK. The list was drawn up as part of the Guild of Fine Food?s annual Great Taste accreditation scheme, which saw 8,807 food and drink products blind-tasted and whittled down over the course of 45 days by 350 experts.Demarquette included in Top 50 Foods in Britain

The top 50 food and drink products were chosen from the 123 entries that had gained a coveted 3-star gold and each one has now been nominated for a Golden Fork Award, the highest accolade in fine food and drink which will be announced at the Awards? dinner at London?s Royal Garden Hotel this September.

Judges this year included Masterchef winner and restaurateur Mat Follas, restaurant critic and Masterchef judge Charles Campion, food writers Lucas Hollweg and Xanthe Clay and over 300 food buyers from leading food halls, delicatessens and farm shops, including Harrods, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason.

Guild of Fine Food chairman Bob Farrand said that each of the food and drink products entered into Great Taste undergoes the most rigorous scrutiny.

?To achieve a 3-star grading involves at least 25 experts unanimously agreeing that the product tastes divine,? he said. ?But to be included in the Top 50 Foods in Britain meant each one had to satisfy the discerning palates of a further 25 dedicated foodies. These products all deliver the most extraordinary taste.?Imperial China Luxury Chocolates by Demarquette

10 Tips for Maximizing Your Business Networking Efforts - blog*spot

NetworkingIn today?s society it is not uncommon to hear someone say ?you have to get out and network?, or ?it?s all about networking.? So, what exactly do they mean when they use the term ?networking?? In the business world, networking means leveraging your professional and personal connections to grow your business and bring in new clients. Although it may sound fairly simple, business networking is actually a complex process. It is all about building relationships!

Business networking must be strategic and focused. Many people have the misconception that if they show up to an event, shake a few hands, and collect business cards then they have been ?networking?. However, all they have really done is collect small pieces of paper and shake a lot of hands; no relationships were actually formed. To begin building a relationship?a connection must be made between you and the person you are meeting. That connection will be what helps you determine if that contact can contribute to the growth of your business.

Unfortunately, not everyone you meet is in a position to help grow your business, but everything you do should be?influenced by your intent to grow your business. The best way to network for business growth?is?to be proactive. You have to plan?activities that are specifically?geared toward networking. You can attend tradeshows or?community lunches, visit business networking websites and forums, or attend after-hours events set up by local business groups and Chambers of Commerce.

Here are 10 tips to help you get the most out of your effort while attending business networking activities:

1)?Ask questions.

When you meet someone, ask open-ended questions about his or her business. The more you can find out the easier it will be to determine if they are in a position to help you. Don?t do all the talking!

2)?Circulate around the room.

Put a smile on your face, walk around, and start conversations. Don?t stand in the corner with your arms folded across your chest!

3)?Work smarter, not harder.

Use your time efficiently by discovering what networking formula works for you. Seek out groups, events,?and professional people that are relevant to your goals. Don?t limit your targeting to the obvious business people or events!

4)?Use your personality to your advantage.

If humour comes naturally to you, then use it. Making people laugh is not a bad thing. Just don?t make jokes at the expense of others!

5)?Know what you are going to say.

Whether you are talking to someone in person, online, or on the phone, have a short ?elevator speech? prepared. Don?t take longer than 20-30 seconds to explain who you are and?what you do!

6)?Differentiate yourself.

Make sure you include what is different or special about your business, or you, compared to other businesses. Don?t miss an opportunity by letting people think there is no difference between you and other businesses!

7)?Give before you receive.

Introduce new connections to people with which you have already established a relationship. Good deeds and helpfulness tend to produce positive effects. Don?t always put your needs before the needs of others!

8)?Always keep your integrity.

Building trust and having a good reputation is essential for growing a strong business network. One way to develop trust and a good reputation is by being able to admit when you have made a mistake. Don?t forget to acknowledge and apologize when you make a mistake!

9)?Be a positive influence.

Positive language and a smile can go a long way. People are usually more attracted to?people with positive attitudes?rather than negative ones.?Strive to be known as a positive person that everyone wants to be around.?Don?t become known as the ?Negative Nancy? in your business network!

10) Follow-up on referrals.

When people give you referrals, your actions become a reflection on them. Making sure that you respect and honour that will build trust in the relationship and result in more referrals in the future. Don?t take referrals for granted!

Some people tend to get frustrated with networking because they feel that for every one step of progress they make, they take ten steps backwards. Remember, networking is about building relationships, and relationships are built over time. You have the power to control who you meet, where you meet them, and how the relationship will be developed and leveraged for mutual benefit. When done correctly, business networking can provide avenues of opportunity that you may have otherwise never discovered.

?The richest people in the world look for and build networks, everyone else looks for work.? Robert Kiyosaki

GL Communications Inc.conveyed today its expertise in Climate Controlled Outdoor Cabinets for communications Systems.Gaithersburg, Maryland July 26, 2012 GL Communications Inc. a leader in providing PC-based test, analysis and simulation products and consulting services to the worldwide telecommunications industry, conveyed today its expertise in designing Climate Controlled Outdoor Cabinets for communications Systems.

Speaking to the press, Mr. Vijay Kulkarni, CEO of the company said, ?Climate controlled outdoor equipment cabinets play an important role in insuring reliable and quality communications links. Outdoor cabinets that house today's modern communications systems are very different from their previously versions. Present-day cabinets are home to a number of state-of-the-art electronic systems and elements used for public communications, intelligent transportation systems, CCTV surveillance, and other equipment related to homeland security for transit and public safety requirements.?

He added, ?The electronic systems include computers and servers consisting of microprocessors, fiber optic devices, Ethernet routers and switches, uninterrupted power supply units, and other semiconductor elements. They are very susceptible to high temperatures and high humidity. Overheating and condensation would shorten their life expectancies and cause major failures. Hence, they require an environment controlled for heat and humidity for proper functioning.?

Mr. Kulkarni added, ?Designing a modern-day communications cabinet is complex and requires extensive knowledge and experience. Some factors that go into design considerations are: Size and type of communications equipment, Equipment placement inside cabinet, Mounting systems for the equipment, Total estimated power dissipation, and Site location requirements and more.

Our experts study the environmental conditions inside the cabinets and leverage their experience to design and specify climate controlled outdoor cabinets. Our solution leads to a more controlled environment inside the cabinet and ensure that our clients' telecommunications links continue to be highly reliable even in accordance with adverse weather conditions.?

How to cook perfect pea soup | Life and style | The Guardian

The humble pea is one of the unsung heroes of the British kitchen as far as I'm concerned. It's the making of egg and chips, the perfect complement to sausage and mash and the icing on the cake of fish pie ? a little piece of summer fresh from the freezer all year round. Perhaps because of this very ubiquity, we tend to take peas for granted, which means we don't make the most of their short but glorious season, and the simple, rustic joy of podding peas in the sunshine while pretending to be Ma Larkin from the Darling Buds of May.

One Madame de Maintenon, writing at the end of the 17th century, reminds us of what a treat fresh peas must have been before Clarence Birdseye stepped into the fold, as well as how very idle the French aristocracy really were: "The question of peas continues. The anticipation of eating them, the pleasure of having eaten them and the joy of eating them again are the three subjects that our princes have been discussing for four days ... It has become a fashion ? indeed, a passion".

This rare delicacy deserve to be more than just a side dish: peas should roll into the spotlight. Crushed on a chunky piece of toast or gently braised with lettuce and spring onions, they make a fine dinner all on their own, but one of my favourite ways to serve them is in a vivid green soup, with a far finer, sweeter flavour than the split pea broths so comforting in cold weather. What you lose in bouncy texture you gain in show-stopping emerald razzmatazz. And that's never a bad thing.

Fresh versus frozen

Jane Grigson recipe pea soup Jane Grigson recipe pea soup. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

Of course, just about anything you can do with fresh peas can also be done with frozen ? so is there any point in all that shelling, if you don't enjoy it as much as I do? After all, even Nigel Slater calls frozen peas a "dependable delight" in his book Tender (although he admits they lack "romance"), and Jane Grigson prefaces the recipe for June pea soup in her Vegetable Book by saying that in winter, "frozen peas do quite well; although some of the pure directness is lost".

Like Tamasin Day-Lewis, who seems easy on the fresh or frozen front in her recipe in All You Can Eat, Mrs Grigson suggests adding "three or four of the best and brightest pods" to the soup as well as their contents, presumably for their sweet, intensely pea-like flavour. I make all my soups with fresh peas, apart from Rose Elliot's green pea and mint soup from the 30-Minute Vegetarian, which, presumably for reasons of speed, calls for the frozen variety.

To be honest, all the soups are deliciously sweet, but, although I'd be hard pressed to pick out the fresh from the frozen, Jane Grigson and Tamasin Day-Lewis's soups do seem to have a particularly strong pea-like flavour, which I attribute to the pods. Pureeing them along with the peas, as Mrs Grigson suggests, proves a bad idea however ? it means passing the soup through a sieve before reheating it and, as well as the remaining fibrous pieces of pod, I lose much of the thick green pea-like sludge at the bottom. Perhaps my sieve was simply too fine, but it seems a shame nevertheless.

If you are using fresh peas, buy them just before you make the soup ? the sugars are quick to convert to distinctly less tasty starch after harvesting. Look for the smaller, sweeter petits pois if you're buying frozen.

Liquid: a stock check

Delia recipe pea soup Delia recipe pea soup. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

The principle ingredient in any soup is, of course, liquid. Delia and Jane Grigson stick to water, Rose Elliot goes for vegetable stock and Lindsey Bareham uses chicken in her Celebration of Soup recipe ? so, when Tamasin Day-Lewis gives me the choice of chicken or ham stock, I plump for the latter, in the interests of diversity.

I find all the stocks too salty however ? they overpower, rather than complement the sweetness of the peas. Jane Grigson's soup is a little too thin and subtly-flavoured for my liking, but Delia's hit the nail on the head flavourwise: her soup tastes cleanly and simply of vegetables.

In this instance, I'm with Marcel Boulestin, who, in his popular 1931 cookbook What Shall We Have Today? is firm on the water point, claiming that "when made with the addition of stock [soups] lose all character and cease to be what they were intended to be. The fresh pleasant taste is lost". I disagree: although more robust flavours can take it, peas, I think, should be left to their own delicate devices.

Thickeners

Cream is a popular addition to pea soup, somewhat puzzlingly from my point of view as it's not the first ingredient that springs to mind for a light, summery supper. Jane Grigson uses whipping cream, and Lindsey Bareham double cream and egg, while Delia stirs in a little creme fraiche at the end. I think cream in the soup itself blunts the sweet freshness of the peas, but I do like the tanginess of the creme fraiche as a complement ? you can stir it in, or not, as suits your mood.

Rose Elliot uses a potato to add richness and body, giving her soup a fluffy, earthy quality. It's nice, but more of a wintery flavour.

Alliums and herbs

Rose Elliot recipe pea soup Rose Elliot recipe pea soup. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

Alliums of some sort are a must in a soup ? Rose and Tamasin go for plain and simple onions, Lindsey for shallots, and Jane and Delia for spring onions. The sweetness of the shallot is good with the peas, but the herbaceousness of the spring onions is even nicer. I don't think the garlic clove Jane also adds is necessary though: I want to keep this simple.

Mint is obviously a popular choice: all my recipes use it in some way, but I prefer it stirred in at the end, as Delia, Jane and Tamasin suggest, rather than simmered with the peas, as in Lindsey and Rose's recipes; it keeps the taste fresher.

Method

Tamasin Day-Lewis recipe pea soup Tamasin Day-Lewis recipe pea soup. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

Lindsey's fresh green pea soup is the only one which doesn't pur?e the soup before serving ? instead the peas, shallots and ham bob about in a mixture of water, chicken stock, double cream and egg. It's a surprisingly elegant dish, the sweetness of the peas contrasting with the silky richness of the liquid, but it's not the kind of pea soup I'm after. I also find Tamasin and Jane Grigson's too thin ? I don't want something to stand a spoon up in, but Delia and Rose's slightly thicker soups at least hint at the original texture of the peas.

Other ingredients

As I'm not using stock, a hint of savoury pork, always a winner with peas and their ilk, is very welcome here. Delia and Tamasin's bacon works better than Lindsey's ham, because the fat melts in the pan, releasing its flavour into the soup. If you'd prefer to keep the soup vegetarian, however, leave out the bacon and use vegetable stock instead.

Lindsey adds the juice of a lemon to her soup ? although it's a little sour for my taste, I like the idea of a touch of freshness, so in a squeeze goes.

Delia adds lettuce and spinach to her soup, which, as she observes, gives it a gorgeous dark green colour ? it's very nice indeed, but this soup should be all about the peas. She also adds a grating of nutmeg, which I think of as a wintery flavour. This particular soup should be all about the delicate, sweet flavours of summer, whatever time of year you end up making it. (And incidentally, it's equally good cold.)

Perfect pea soup

Felicity's perfect pea soup Felicity's perfect pea soup. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

Serves 4

30g butter
4 spring onions, chopped
2 rashers of smoked streaky bacon, chopped
450g shelled peas (about 1.2kg of pods) plus 5 pods
750ml water (or vegetable stock if you're omitting the bacon)
Pinch of sugar, optional
Squeeze of lemon juice
Small bunch of mint, chopped and creme fraiche, to serve

1. Heat the butter over a medium heat in a large pan and add the spring onions and bacon. Sweat until cooked, but not coloured.

2. Add the peas and pods if using and stir well, then pour in 750ml water. Bring to the boil, then simmer until the peas are tender (about 10 minutes depending on size).

3. Remove the pods and puree the soup using a blender or hand blender then add the lemon juice and season to taste ? you may also wish to add a pinch of sugar depending on the sweetness of your peas. Add a little more water if you'd prefer a thinner soup.

4. Reheat if serving hot and serve garnished with chopped mint and a swirl of creme fraiche.

Is soup the best thing to do with a glut of peas, or do you have other bright ideas? Or do you just prefer them served with a lick of butter and a sprig of mint? And what other soups suit summer?

Epson WorkForce WF-7510

Printers like the Epson WorkForce WF-7510 ($249.99 direct), are naturally niche products, of interest only to offices that need to print, scan, fax, or copy on paper that's larger than letter and legal size. The WF-7510 fits in an even tighter niche than most. With only one paper tray, the printer is most suitable for a small, micro, or home office that either doesn't need to change paper sizes often or already has a printer for letter and legal size, and needs a larger size printer to supplement it. The good news is that it fits that niche very well.

The WF-7510 has a lot in common with the Epson WorkForce WF-7520 ($299.99 direct, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed. In fact, except for the second paper tray in the WF-7520, the two printers share many of the same of features.

Like the WF-7520, the WF-7510 can print and fax from, as well as scan to, a PC, including over a network, and work as a standalone fax machine and copier. For scanning, both the flatbed and the 30-page automatic document feeder (ADF) can handle up to tabloid size paper.

Paper handling is obviously limited by the single tray. However note that unlike the directly competitive Brother MFC-J6510DW ($250, 4 stars), the WF-7510 isn't limited to a maximum 11 by 17 inches for paper size. The tray is designed for paper up to 13 by 19 inches, and can even accept larger sizes, up to 13 by 44 inches, one sheet at time, although anything over 19 inches long will be hanging out from the front of the tray.

Setup and Speed
Setting up the printer is standard fare, with network support for both Ethernet and Wi-Fi. For my tests I connected using the Ethernet port and installed the driver and software on a Windows Vista system.

Not surprisingly, the WF-7510 tied the WF-7520 for speed. I timed both on our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software) at the same 3.9 pages per minute (ppm). That makes both closely matched to the Brother MFC-J6510DW as well as the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J6710DW ($300 street, 4 stars), which both came in at 4.1 ppm. The WF-7510 was much faster for photos than any of these other printers, averaging 1 minute 13 seconds for a 4 by 6, but it's also the only one in the group that I tested with a matte paper rather than a glossy photo paper.

Epson WorkForce WF-7510

Output Quality and Other Issues
Output quality for the WF-7510 is best described as not particularly impressive, but good enough so it's a not a problem. Text quality is par for an inkjet, which makes it more than good enough for almost any business use, although not something you'd want for serious desktop publishing. Graphics output in my tests was a little below par, but easily good enough for any internal business use. Depending on your level of perfectionism, you may or may not consider the output with default settings to be suitable for PowerPoint handouts or the like.

Photos are a special case, because Epson recommended using a matte presentation paper for our tests instead of the more typical glossy photo paper. Epson lists the paper on its Web site as a photo paper, however, and says that it's typical of the paper most businesses use for printing photos on the WF-7510. In any case, all of the photo output was suitable for business presentations or the like, and most of the photos qualified as true photo quality.

One other issue that demands mention is the running cost for the WF-7510. Epson resists quoting a cost per page, but based on the cost of the cartridges and the claimed yield, the cost per page for letter size pages comes out to 3.2 cents per monochrome page and 11.5 cents per color page. As a point of reference, the Brother MFC-6510DW works out to 1.7 cents per mono page and 7.0 cents per color page. How much this difference in cost per page matters will depend primarily on how many pages you expect to print.

Both the Epson WorkForce WF-7510 and the Brother MFC-6510DW offer only one tray, which is part of what makes them directly competitive (although the Brother printer also offers a manual feed.) It's hard to give an enthusiastic recommendation to either one, given that the Epson WF-7520 and Brother MFC-6710DW both add a second tray without costing much more. But if you don't need to switch paper sizes very often, are looking for a second printer strictly for large-size printing, or just need the tabloid-size scan capability, either will do. And if you need to print on paper that's larger than 11 by 17 inches, the Epson WorkForce WF-7510 is the obvious choice.

Madagascar rivals meet for landmark talks

Madagascan leader Andry Rajoelina and the man he toppled in 2009, Marc Ravalomanana, met Wednesday on a remote Seychelles island to force a breakthrough in reconciliation efforts.

"The face-to-face talks between the Madagascan transitional president and his predecessor began this morning on the island of Desroches," a Seychelles government official said.

The pair met alongside South African President Jacob Zuma, a key mediator in the talks, which are being held on a private beach paradise island some 230 kilometres (140 miles) from the Indian Ocean archipelago's main island, Mahe.

The 15-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC), which is mediating in the talks, has set a July 31 deadline for the rivals to settle their differences, so that a timetable for elections can be unveiled next week under a deal signed last year.

Seychelles President James Michel also attended the meeting, which is expected to close later Wednesday.

The Indian Ocean island of Madagascar has been mired in political crisis since Rajoelina ousted Ravalomanana in March 2009 with the army's support.

Rajoelina, a former disc jockey who was only 34 when he seized power -- and who had to change the constitution to become eligible for the top job in future polls -- has failed to garner broad international backing.

Rajoelina and Ravalomanana last year signed a "roadmap" toward elections, but the deal has yet to be fully implemented.

The two men have already held talks among the country's main political groups since the ouster of Ravalomanana by Rajoelina, a former mayor of the capital Antananarivo. But they have previously avoided a one-on-one meeting.

Their subordinates have inked several pacts but have yet to find a permanent solution to the three-year crisis engulfing Africa's largest island.

One of the main stumbling blocks is to establish conditions for Ravalomanana's eventual return from his exile in South Africa.

The roadmap signed in September provides for his return home without conditions, but he has twice tried and failed to return to Madagascar.

Moreover, parliament has passed a law which bars people with criminal records from running for office and demands that any presidential aspirants must have paid their taxes in full, effectively excluding Ravalomanana.

In 2010, Ravalomanana was sentenced in absentia to life in prison and hard labour for the murders of around 30 demonstrators, killed by his presidential guard in 2009 protests that led to his overthrow.

"A return to stability in Madagascar is crucial for all the countries in our southern and eastern Africa and Indian Ocean region," President Michel said in a speech Tuesday.

He warned that the island nation, where millions "are sinking into extreme poverty" could be facing a "social catastrophe."

Gettysburg College Athletics - Twenty Years Later, Husain Reflects ...

Twenty years ago, Arif Husain ?93 reached the pinnacle of success in his sport.

Wearing the green of his native Pakistan, the track & field standout competed in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.

Between his junior and senior seasons at Gettysburg College, Husain returned to Pakistan to participate in his country?s Olympic trials. At 23 years old, he went on to qualify in both the 100- and 200-meter dash.

Though it certainly represented the high mark in Husain?s athletic career, he also enjoyed a spectacular four-year run with the Bullets. He was an eight-time All-American and captured the NCAA Division III outdoor national title in the 200 during his senior year.

A 2003 selection in the College?s Hall of Athletic Honor, he was also recently named to the Middle Atlantic Conference?s inaugural Hall of Fame. He currently resides in Stamford, Conn., where he works in aviation consulting and finance.

As the 2012 Summer Olympics get underway in London, Husain?recently took some time out to reflect on his Olympic experience with GettysburgSports.com.

GSC: Every four years has to be a special time for you. What kind of feelings do you get when the Olympics come around?
AH: I probably appreciate the Olympics a little more than fans who just tune in every four years. The sense of competition (and camaraderie) is more interesting to me than the medal count (which I don?t focus on at all).

GSC: Coming from the small world of Division III athletics, can you describe what it was like suddenly finding yourself on the biggest stage of all for your sport?
AH: The whole process of getting from the warm-up track to the starting line is so much more structured than anything I had experienced. The first call for your race is about 50-60 minutes before you actually race, and from then on, the eight competitors are in the same confined area until you finish the race.

First, officials check your spikes, accreditation, uniform, etc. in a small tent at the warm-up track, then athletes are escorted to the stadium, which takes 10 minutes. Athletes spend another 10 minutes under a grandstand in a warm-up area (three to four lanes and starting blocks, etc.) before going into a small room for another check of all of the above. Ten minutes before the race, athletes are allowed on the track to set up starting blocks and for run-throughs.

Athletes finish their race and go through a line of reporters as they exit the track. There are TVs everywhere in the stadium ? near the start line for the 100 meters, the finish line, under the stadium ? so the feedback from the race (in terms of replays) is pretty instantaneous.

When it came to racing, I was able to block out other distractions and just focus on what I had to do and try and execute my race as best I could, so that didn?t change much. The stage happened to be bigger, but the mechanics of running a good race didn?t change.

GSC: What are some of your most vivid memories from Barcelona?
AH: Two memories stand out. One was the almost complete silence in the stadium just prior to the final of the men?s 100.? And contrastingly, the crescendo of noise in the same stadium a few days later when local resident Fermin Cacho took the lead on the final bend in the 1,500 and won the race. What an amazing buzz in the stadium in both instances ? in the first case it was conveyed by silence, and in the second by an enormous roar.

GSC: How do you feel you performed in your two races?
AH: Not as well as I would have liked. My training was geared toward peaking in May for the NCAA nationals. By the time I ran in Barcelona in late July-early August my body was pretty beat up.? I ran 0.2 to 0.3 slower than I had been running in May and June at the trials.

GSC: In what ways did your first three years at Gettysburg prepare you for the Olympics?
AH: My junior year (just prior to the Olympics) was my breakthrough year. I had no expectations my first year and was very lucky to have the right coaches for me. Darryl Jones, Mike Spangler, and [Head Coach] Ed Riggs all really helped me develop through my four years at Gettysburg.? (I remember at nationals my senior year a coach from another college commenting on how good a rapport I had with Darryl.)

In the second season, I was physically in great shape, but didn?t realize the importance of mental strength. It started to come together my third year, but I still didn?t learn to run relaxed consistently until my final season.

GSC: What was it like returning to Gettysburg for your senior year after competing in Barcelona? In what ways did it change your relationship with your teammates or opponents?
AH: I can?t speak for my opponents, but the experience probably gave me credibility among my teammates. And gaining credibility was important, because I had very specific ideas on how to mold the track team into a legitimate contender for the 1993 season.? Perhaps my teammates were willing to give more credence to my ideas because of my Olympic experience. The team really responded to the challenges that were presented to us, and developed an attitude of embracing them, which we might not have possessed previously.?

The men?s team was undefeated for the year. We defended our 4x400 win at Penn Relays, finished second at the conference championships, and had the most athletes (men and women) qualify for nationals in my four years at Gettysburg. That, in the end, was the most satisfying.

For me personally, witnessing how some of the Olympic athletes trained and the standard they achieved pushed me to train harder during the offseason, and really set me up for my senior year.

GSC: In what ways do you feel the Olympics, or the sport of track & field, have changed since your trip to Barcelona?
AH: The obvious answer is that the standards have improved, as they should.

In 1992, a 10.2 could get you into the Olympic semifinal in the 100 and a 10.1 into the final. Now, you have to be a sub-10 second sprinter for a spot in the final, realistically speaking.

The basics of the sport are still the same ? run or jump faster than your opponent, even though training techniques have changed. Coach Riggs and I were discussing last year how we would train completely differently if I were running now.

Track & Field still has a much bigger footprint in Europe than in the U.S. and that hasn?t changed, nor is it likely to in the near future. And that?s fine.

GSC: Have you attended any of the Olympic Games since Barcelona?
AH: Yes ? 1996 in Atlanta, but purely as a spectator.?

GSC: What kind of a reaction do you normally get when you tell somebody that you are a former Olympian?
AH: I hardly ever tell anyone. My wife or close friends might mention it to someone (but that too is rare), or a client might ask about it since it?s in my professional bio, but it?s something that I generally don?t advertise or dwell on. The Olympics were a great experience, but one of the most important lessons I?ve learned is to keep looking forward.? I?m more interested in challenges and opportunities that I face in my life now.

GSC: What was the greatest impact the Olympics had on you?
AH: I learned how to embrace pressure situations rather than getting flustered by them. Even now tight deadlines (at work) and difficult situations get the adrenaline pumping.

The recent comments from Packers president Mark Murphy regarding his inability to support an 18-game regular season was met by many with approval.? And that was my initial reaction, too.

But then I saw the fine print.

?I would be in support of a move to two and 16,? Murphy said. ?Reduce the number of preseason games. The challenge there obviously is you?re losing revenue.?

Ding ding ding ding ding!? (And then Gus Fring blows up.)

As we?ve mentioned a time or two in the past year, the NFL surrendered in the new CBA the ability to unilaterally expand the regular season.? But the league now has the ability to unilaterally shrink the preseason from, coincidentally, four games to two.

So the league can cut the preseason in half, if the league wants.? And then, when the players crunch the numbers and realize the impact of the lost 47-cents-on-the-dollar revenue share on the salary cap, all of a sudden that 18-game regular season may look pretty good.

Especially when the players crunch the numbers regarding the positive impact of two more regular-season games on the bottom line.

As explained during Wednesday?s PFT Live, that?s the only way the NFL can sell an 18-game season, given the current sensitivity to injuries and concussions.? The players have to want it, and the players have to initiate the effort to get it.

To make that happen, the NFL must risk losing its share of the preseason revenue.? And if you think the preseason revenue isn?t a big deal, remember that it was the potential loss of revenue from preseason games that served as the moment at which the league and the NFLPA realized that the lockout needed to end, one year ago Wednesday.

So the ultimate reality show is now in the early stages of a new game of chicken.? Will the owners risk preseason revenue to cajole the players into wanting to expand the regular season?? Will the players shrug at the reduced salary cap resulting from a reduced preseason?

It?s unclear how it will work out, but it?s becoming more clear that those issues will soon be front and center, for both the league and the union.

GOP bill has major typo on jobless rate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A House Republican bill is designed to freeze major government regulations until the unemployment rate reaches 6 percent or below. An error in drafting the bill, however, turns that goal upside down.

The bill debated Wednesday says the freeze should stay on until the employment rate equals 6 percent or less. That means there would be a freeze until the unemployment rate reached 94 percent.

The mistake was pointed out by Rep. Gerald Connolly, a Virginia Democrat who opposes the bill. Chairman Darrell Issa of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the bill's chief supporter, said the mistake was made by professional staff without any partisan motive.

The current unemployment rate is 8.2 percent.

Cross-Platform Gaming Startup TreSensa Locks Up $1 Million In ...

Well, New York-based TreSensa is having a busy morning. The cross-platform gaming startup revealed that it has locked up a cool $1 million in angel funding, and launched its new TreSensa game engine SDK into public beta.

TreSensa is the brainchild of Rakesh Raju and Tremor Video alums Rob Grossberg and Vincent Obermeier, who departed from the digital video company shortly after it acquired ScanScout in 2010. In short, the year-old company?s mission is to provide support and tools to developers who want to create HTML5 games for players sitting at desks or on the go.

The company?s focus on cross-platform gaming may seem worlds away from Tremor?s digital video roots (the pair was apparently ?burned out on video?), but Grossberg tells me that the theories behind both projects aren?t that different. According to him, both companies aim to provide ?content creators an in emerging arena? with the tools to make them successful. For Tremor, that meant (among other things) helping those creators monetize their videos with ads, but TreSensa game creators will be able to tap into the company?s distribution services and the ability to integrate features like asynchronous multiplayer (currently in private beta).

It?s up to each developer to decide how much they want to bank on TreSensa?s platform ? they can dive in head-first and use TreSensa?s own game engine, but that?s hardly a requirement. Co-founder Obermeier was quick to note that developers who use other engines or SDKs will still be able to add TreSensa?s additional features into the mix.

?We?re making TreSensa component-sized,? he said. ?Say you?re using Unity or Corona ? you can do that and still use our backend services to implement things like multiplayer support.?

Of course, helping to monetize those games remains a big focus for TreSensa ? the company?s first step is to implement support for current monetization models like offering paid virtual goods and digital currencies. From there, the pair peg advertising as playing a critical role because of the extensive reach that HTML5 games have ? after all, they can be played by anyone with a smartphone or a reasonably up-to-date web browser.

It?s still early days for TreSensa, but the startup?s development platform has already garnered some attention from interested investors. As it turns out though, that angel fund raising process was relatively painless, mostly because Grossberg and Obermeier entered into it with a considerable network of contacts and resources.

?We?re not spring chickens here,? Grossberg quipped.

That said, it?s not like the two of them embarked on the process without any help. Grossberg cites New York startup incubator First Growth Venture Network as a crucial resource for the team as they worked to get TreSensa off the ground. Now, developers and media companies are showing signs of interest in TreSensa?s nascent offerings. YouTube content partner Mondo Media recently used TreSensa?s game engine SDK to create an HTML5 game based on the Happy Tree Friends franchise, and Grossberg mentioned to me that a ?very large, New York-based media company? has expressed interest in TreSensa?s multiplayer functionality.

TreSensa is focused on building HTML5-based technology solutions for casual game developers. Its technology reduces costs and time spent to build casual games, eases in-game social interactions, enables broad cross-platform distribution, and optimizes/maximizes in-game revenue potential.

(AP) ? The mother of James Holmes had no idea her son was believed to be the gunman who killed a dozen people in a Colorado theater until she was contacted hours after the tragedy at her San Diego home by a reporter, the family's lawyer said Monday.

At a news conference in San Diego, the family's attorney, Lisa Damiani (dah-ME-ah-nee), told reporters that Arlene Holmes received a phone call at 5:45 a.m. Friday from an ABC News reporter who asked if she was the mother of James Holmes who lives in Aurora, Colo.

"I did not know anything about a shooting in Aurora at that time," Arlene Holmes said in the statement.

Authorities say Holmes opened fire on a crowded movie theater Friday at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie. Twelve people were killed and 58 were injured. James Holmes, 24, made his first court appearance Monday in a Denver suburb where he's being held without bond.

Damiani declined to say whether the suspect's parents were surprised their son was being accused of a crime or whether he had shown any signs of instability before July 20. Damiani said they would not publicly discuss details about their son.

When asked if they stood by Holmes, Damiani said, "Yes they do. He's their son."

Holmes, who has been assigned a public defender, is expected to be formally charged next Monday. He is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder.

"Everyone's concerned" about the possibility of the death penalty, Damiani said.

"They're doing as well as they can under the circumstances," said Damiani of the family, adding that they have been getting "amazing" support from their church.

The parents want to reiterate what they said shortly after the shooting, that their hearts go out to the victims and their families, Damiani said.

Treasury pressure on climate goal

The Chancellor has demanded that the Energy Secretary Ed Davey abandon the UK's pathway towards climate targets.

In a leaked letter, George Osborne says renewables are too expensive and suggests expanding plans for gas-fired generation.

The government's adviser, the Climate Change Committee, says this will cause the UK to miss its 2030 climate goals.

The CCC warns that with volatile gas prices, consumers could end up paying more for electricity, not less.

The demands are laid out in a letter seen by BBC News.

The Draft Energy Bill in the early stages of Parliament aims to keep the lights on whilst meet government goals on climate change.

The CCC advises that in order to meet the goal of an 80% cut in CO2 by 2050 the government needs to have almost all electricity produced by low-carbon sources by 2030.

In his letter, dated 9 July, the Chancellor tells the Liberal Democrat Energy Secretary to give up that ambition and explicitly state that gas will play a core part in generation by 2030.

He writes: "We need to set out an approach which puts costs to consumers at the heart. (We should be) limiting support for low-carbon generation to a level the country can afford.

"We should commit publicly to ensuring that British consumers will be able to get benefits if the price of gas falls."

The Treasury is banking on advice that gas-fired electricity will remain cheaper than renewables, but this is hotly debated. The CCC and the regulator Ofgem warn that high gas prices would force costs up.

The CCC says a strategy focusing on renewables offers carbon benefits as well as insulating consumers from spikes in gas prices.

Mr Osborne's demands are made as part of an ongoing negotiation between Treasury and DECC over consumer subsidies for onshore wind. Mr Osborne says he will agree to Mr Davey's suggestion of a 10% cut in subsidy, but only if his other stipulations are met.

They include an insistence that the onshore subsidies are reviewed within this Parliament. Industry spokesmen say this will deter investors in wind who've already been spooked by government delays in policy.

Another demand is that government takes powers to close down feed-in-tariffs.

David Kennedy, chief executive of the CCC, told BBC News: "This would all lead to a second dash for gas. This would be incompatible with the government's climate change goals."

Environment groups have reacted furiously to the wish-list. Downing Street, Treasury and DECC have declined to comment on the row.

The Chancellor's move was welcomed by Angela Kelly, chair of the anti-wind group Country Guardian. She told BBC News: "I have been fighting against industrial wind farms for 20 years and if the Chancellor is going to do something to rein them in, so much the better."

The Treasury is in a long-standing dispute with the Energy Select Committee over its influence on policy. MPs have asked Treasury ministers to give evidence on the Energy Bill but they have refused.

Back-bench Conservatives opposed to wind farms in the countryside are reported to have been lobbying Mr Osborne.

Joss Garman from campaign group Greenpeace tweeted: "Osborne's position means he's exposed to claim he's putting partisan politics before jobs & investment."

James Murray, editor of BusinessGreen.com said: "Make no mistake this is an all-out assault on the entire green energy sector."
