Boise State builds big lead, barely hangs on against New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Boise State football coach Chris Petersen walked out of the locker room to meet the media after another closer-than-it-should-have-been victory Saturday at University Stadium.

?How are you?? somebody asked.

?Three and one,? Petersen replied, citing the team?s record knowing that he?d face another set of questions about the Broncos? inability to finish.

The Broncos squandered nearly all of a 25-point halftime lead on their way to a 32-29 defeat of New Mexico, a rebuilding program that appears on its way out of the Mountain West cellar.

Boise State built its 25-0 lead with help from three New Mexico fumbles.

The Lobos (2-3) fought back in the conference opener thanks to two Broncos fumbles, including one on the opening kickoff of the second half.

?We?ll never question their heart,? Petersen said of his players. ?We told them that in the locker room. I think those guys compete and go hard, but we?ve got to play better.?

On a day when the offense showed significant improvement in the red zone (four TDs in six drives) ? junior quarterback Joe Southwick played his best game (career highs of 311 yards and three TDs) and senior D.J. Harper and redshirt freshman Jay Ajayi combined for 216 rushing yards ? it was the previously reliable defense that blinked.

New Mexico scored touchdowns on its first four second-half drives without throwing a pass, including 96- and 75-yard marches. The Lobos used their triple-option attack to rush for 330 yards overall.

?Their coach did a great job working off us,? said senior defensive tackle Mike Atkinson, who forced two fumbles during the first half. ?They came out and played completely different football. We didn?t do our job as well as we should have. Give respect to their coach and their players.?

Petersen predicted this might happen at his Monday press conference, when he was grilled about the underperforming offense.

?We could be having this same conversation about our defense next week,? he said then.

New Mexico gashed Boise State on an outside option play in the second half where the Lobos always seemed to have the quarterback and a pitch man against one defender ? an impossible situation for the defense. They hit plays of 27, 29 and 40 yards to key the two long touchdown drives.

?We?re trying to mix up some calls, mix up some blitzes, to take some chances,? Petersen said. ?It can turn into a guessing game out there and that?s a scary situation.?

Boise State?s offense was nearly unstoppable in the first half ? with three touchdowns, a field goal and a punt before choosing to run out the clock in the final minute (Petersen didn?t want to risk a turnover, he said). New Mexico crossed the Boise State 40 twice but fumbled both times.

?The first half was awesome, we did a great job,? Southwick said.

The second half was another story ? almost another game.

And it started with the first play. Sophomore Dallas Burroughs fumbled on the kickoff return, handing the ball to the Lobos on the Boise State 26-yard line.

?In the second half, we came out fighting and showed them we were not giving up,? said linebacker Joe Stoner, whose team won one game each of the past three seasons. ?This is a whole different era. We just want them to know that if you are going to come into our home turf, you are going to have to play us for the whole four quarters.?

The Broncos seemed to regain control early in the fourth quarter with an 8-yard TD catch by Shane Williams-Rhodes for a 32-14 lead.

Williams-Rhodes, the true freshman with electrifying quickness, caught a quick hitch at the line of scrimmage, faked inside and cut outside ? leaving the defensive back spinning in place.

?That was a dynamic play,? said sophomore receiver Matt Miller, who led the team with nine catches for 68 yards. ?I wish I could do that. That just shows how explosive he is and what he can do in this offense.?

New Mexico came back with its own TD and Williams-Rhodes, who had a key fumble at Michigan State, lost the football again on the ensuing drive. Stoner scooped the ball and ran to the Boise State 1, where freshman running quarterback Cole Gautsche scored a touchdown and two-point conversion to pull within 32-29 with 7:42 left.

?That?s a back-breaker,? Petersen said.

After a missed field goal, New Mexico took over at its own 27 with 3:24 to tie or win the game. The Lobos didn?t even get a first down.

On third-and-3, senior linebacker Tommy Smith read the play perfectly and tackled Gautsche for a 1-yard loss. On fourth-and-4, starting quarterback B.R. Holbrook ? the passer who barely played in the second half ? entered and dropped back to throw.

Smith was responsible for the back, who stayed in to block. Free to roam, Smith anticipated a throw to the wide side of the field and slipped into the passing lane. He dropped the interception ? but a breakup was good enough.

?I?m proud of our guys, how hard they fight, and they make plays when they need to,? Petersen said. ?On both sides, they really did that. It wasn?t pretty.?

Xi3 goes the crowdfunding route for future X3A, X7A modular PCs

Xi3 has been one of the more inventive PC builders in the field, designing its Modular Computers in the belief that small, more upgradable desktops are the way of the future. The company is planning two new systems to further that dream, the X3A and X7A, but it wants our help: it's running a Kickstarter funding drive until October 28th to assist the development and garner some early adopters. Put down $503 or $603 and you'll get the entry-level X3A, a dual-core 1.65GHz (likely AMD E-450-based) PC with 4GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD and either Linux or Windows installed; splurge with $1,103 or more and you'll get the more performance-driven X7A, which jumps to a quad-core chip with a 3.2GHz peak speed, a Windows-loaded 64GB SSD and faster graphics. Assuming Xi3 makes its target, we should see the X3A and X7A arrive in January and February respectively, with Kickstarter supporters beating the larger herd by a week. Even existing owners are accounted for through a Primary I/O Board upgrade, due before the end of this year, that carries more Ethernet and USB 3.0 ports. Crowdfunding is an unusual approach to buying that next PC, without the certainties of shopping at an online store -- but we're also dealing with an unusual PC from the get-go.

Apple CEO apologizes for Maps flaws, recommends rivals

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook apologized Friday to customers frustrated with glaring errors in its new Maps service and, in an unusual move for the consumer giant, directed them to rival services such as Google Inc's Maps instead.

The rare apology follows Apple's launch of its own mapping service earlier this month, when it began selling the iPhone 5 and rolled out iOS 6, the highly anticipated update to its mobile software platform.

Users complained that the new Maps service - based on Dutch navigation equipment and digital map maker TomTom NV's data - contained geographical errors and gaps in information, and that it lacked features that made Google Maps so popular from public transit directions to traffic data and street-view pictures.

"We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better," Cook said in a letter to customers released on its website, adding that the company "fell short" of its commitment to deliver "the best experience possible to our customers."

Unusually, he suggested that customers download rival mapping services available in Apple's App Store while the company improves the product.

"While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app," he said in the letter.

Apple is typically loathe to tout rival services and the contrite apology by Cook is an indication of how Apple is changing under the chief executive who took over last year from co-founder Steve Jobs just before his death. It also took the additional step of prominently displaying the rival services on its Apps Store.

"It is a bit unusual but at the same time, Tim is keeping Apple's commitment to provide the best user experience for customers," Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said. "A key reason for Apple's success is keeping customers happy so we think this is a good move."

"People forget that Google Maps started out inferior to Mapquest and Yahoo Maps," he added.

Apple's home-grown Maps feature -- stitched together by acquiring mapping companies and data from many providers including Waze, Intermap, DigitalGlobe and Urban Mapping -- was introduced with much fanfare in June by software chief Scott Forstall. It was billed as one of the key highlights of the updated iOS6 software.

But errors and omissions in the maps service quickly emerged after the software was rolled out, ranging from misplaced buildings and mislabelled cities to duplicated geographical features.

NEW APPLE

The last time Apple faced such widespread criticism was in 2010, when users complained of signal reception issues on the then-new iPhone 4 model.

A defiant Jobs at the time rejected any suggestion the iPhone 4's design was flawed, but offered consumers free phone cases at a rare, 90-minute press conference called to address those complaints.

While Apple fixed the issue, Jobs had apologized to users only after he was specifically asked if he was sorry. He also said the issue was shared by all the major manufacturers, naming rivals Research in Motion, Samsung Electronics and HTC Corp.

Cook himself played a key role in convincing Jobs to tackle the negative publicity that arose around that issue, something he was initially reluctant to do, according to his biographer.

"Finally Tim Cook was able to shake him out of his lethargy," Walter Isaacson said in his biography on the late Silicon Valley icon. "He quoted someone as saying that Apple was becoming the new Microsoft, complacent and arrogant. The next day Jobs changed his attitude."

It remains to be seen how fast Apple can fix the mapping glitches. Jobs had been in a similar position when he allowed email synchronization software MobileMe to launch in 2008, to deadly reviews. The mercurial CEO took the group to task for it and replaced the group's head. The service is now folded into the iCloud product.

Mapping is a complex process that takes a lot of resources and years to perfect, said Marcus Thielking, co-founder of Skobbler, maker of the popular GPS Navigation 2 app, built using the crowdsourced OpenStreetMap platform.

"It helps a lot if you have great data to start with," he said, adding that it appears that different database were thrown together in building Apple Maps. "They (Apple) can offer incremental updates and that's what they will do."

Cook said that more than 100 million iOS devices are using the new Apple Maps and that the more people use Maps, the better it will get. He also offered some hints on why the company decided to remove Google Maps.

Apple launched the Google-powered Maps "initially with the first version of iOS" and created a home-grown version of the service as it wanted to provide more features, Cook said.

"As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps," he said in the letter.

Google provides turn-by-turn navigation on Android-based devices but the popular feature was not available for Apple devices. Apple Maps replaced Google Maps in iOS 6 and the Google service is now only available through a browser.

Shares of Apple fell 2 percent to close at $667.10 on Nasdaq.

AUVERS-SUR-OISE, France (AP) ? The leader of an Iranian militant group that was taken off the U.S. terror list on Friday says the move will change her group's "balance of power" with the world ? predicting a higher profile in politics, fundraising and diplomacy and increased anti-regime activity in Iran.

The U.S. State Department said the People's Mujahedeen of Iran (MEK) hasn't committed terror for more than a decade. The group has also complied with demands that more than 3,000 of its once-armed members abandon their base in Iraq near the Iranian border for a camp outside Baghdad, an essential step to ending their decades-long presence in Iraq.

The U.S. decision means that, effective immediately, any assets the group has in the United States are unblocked and Americans are permitted to do business with the organization.

A court order had given Clinton until Oct. 1 to act. The group was removed from the European Union's terrorist list in 2009.

Maryam Rajavi, the Paris-based head of the exiled opposition group, said in a rare interview that she hopes the organization can now have the ear of the world's diplomats to help bolster its bid to overthrow Iran's clerical regime. She stressed that its goal was to replace the Islamic Republic with a democratic government.

"It now has become evident for everyone that these (terror) allegations were untrue," she said, praising U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for her "courage."

"Our cause is democracy and the freedom of democracy for the future of Iran," Rajavi said. "We are against fundamentalism which is in power in Iran ... ... The mullahs' (clerical) regime is the center of the exportation of terrorism and fundamentalism in the Middle East."

However, a senior State Department official suggested that removing MEK from the U.S. terrorist list does not translate into a shared common front against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The official said Washington does not view MEK as an opposition movement that can promote democratic values in Iran. The official briefed reporters on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

"They are not part of our picture in terms of the future of Iran," the official said.

The Iranian regime is sure to be furious at the U.S. decision to delist MEK ? for years the only armed exile opposition group. The group, which began as a guerrilla movement fighting Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, helped overthrow the monarch in 1979 then quickly fell out with the Islamic Republic's first leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

MEK later teamed up with Iraq to battle Iran in an eight-year war in the 1980s, then from its Iraqi base continued military action against neighboring Iran.

The United States contends the group was responsible for the killing of several American military officials and defense contractors in the 1970s, carrying out attacks on Iran from its base in Iraq.

The MEK spent huge sums of money over years lobbying for removal from the U.S. terror list, holding rallies in European capitals and elsewhere that featured luminaries like former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge from the administration of George W. Bush. Former House Speaker and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich was among those recently welcomed by the MEK to Paris.

Rajavi, 58, wore what has become a trademark headscarf among MEK women during the interview Friday at MEK's headquarters in the leafy town of Auvers-Sur-Oise north of Paris. She denied claims by critics that MEK has all the earmarks of a cult, saying it is Iran who seeded such allegations as part of their "psychological war" against the group.

"All the energy and potential of our movement were chained" during the 15 years that MEK was listed by the United States as a terrorist organization, she said, speaking in French as well as the Iranian language of Farsi through a translator.

At its headquarters, the group was preparing for a jubilant fete on Saturday, plastering walls on the street with red drapes and photographs of "martyrs," as it refers to members who have been killed.

"The diplomatic scene will be completely different" because the group's status as a pariah will evaporate, Rajavi said, reiterating MEK's long-standing denial of terrorism.

But, she said, "the most important impact ... will be seen inside Iran."

"The balance of power, the balance of power is going to change. For example, the first message for the Iranian people will be they won't fear increasing their activity and increasing their demonstrations," she said. The fear "will evaporate ... and that will lead to the expansion of anti-regime activities within Iran."

With a clean bill of health in the West, the Iranian regime "will no longer have the excuse" of acting against an organization deemed terrorist by the United States.

Mujahedeen, protected in Iraq under dictator Saddam Hussein, were disarmed after the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and are disliked by the new Iraqi government, dominated by Shiite Muslims like those in Iran.

The United States had insisted the MEK's members leave Camp Ashraf, their home in Iraq, as a condition for removal from the terrorist list. All but several hundred militants are now located in Camp Liberty, a former U.S. base outside Baghdad, looking for placement in third countries.

Among those transferred to Camp Liberty were Rajavi's 30-year-old daughter and her 32-year-old son, she revealed.

A veil of mystery has long clung to the group, not the least over the whereabouts of its main founder, Massoud Rajavi, who married Maryam in 1985. He has not been seen publicly since at least 2003, although he continues as MEK's co-leader, and his portrait greets visitors at the well-secured entranthe group's French headquarters.

There has been speculation that he is dead. Rajavi countered those reports Friday and said he is alive but would provide no details.

Neil Young's Pono music service wants to democratize highquality audio video

Neil Young isn't shy when it comes to embracing new technology, something he put beyond question with his latest appearance on The Late show with David Letterman. The artist took the opportunity to reveal plans for his high-fidelity Pono music service. The aim is to tackle the poor quality in which he believes most people receive their music these days -- the humble MP3. Young's offering would comprise a three-pronged approach, including a music store with high-resolution recordings, a digital-to-analog style conversion technology, and portable hardware to listen to it all with. The simple intention is to offer music as it was originally intended to be heard, but at this time there's no detail as to what this actually entails (sorry specification fans).

According to Rolling Stone, the big three labels are interested, and the goal is to unify, rather than diversify, the quality of recorded content. The Pono players (that yellow wedge you see above) will serve up your existing catalog, but you'll likely need to re-buy some of your collection if you want the holistic experience. With no cards fully on the table, we're at the ransom of Young's celebrity endorsements, which all claim that the benefits are tangible. Young, of course, says "You can't get better than this, this is what they do in the studio," but until we get some details, or ears on, everybody knows this is nowhere.

Officials: Terror groups in Libya tried to unite in month leading to attack

Esam Omran Al-fetori / Reuters

By Jim Miklaszewski, NBC News

Intelligence indicates that militant or terrorist groups were attempting to combine forces in the month preceding the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Thursday.

"There was a thread of intelligence that groups in that environment in eastern Libya were seeking to coalesce," Gen. Martin Dempsey said in a briefing to Pentagon reporters,?adding that there was nothing specific in the intelligence that indicated an attack on the U.S. consulate was imminent.?

Dempsey said the intelligence was widely shared with all U.S. departments and agencies.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta added that the assault "clearly was a terrorist attack." Panetta said the investigation to pinpoint which terrorist groups were involved is ongoing.

Panetta and Dempsey also reported that the joint U.S./Afghan patrols that had been suspended following a spike in "insider attacks" on American forces have been resumed, and that most U.S. and NATO forces have returned to normal operations alongside Afghan soldiers and police.

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com

Panetta said the "insider attacks" were intended to undermine the trust built between U.S. and Afghan security forces.

Gen. Dempsey added: "The Taliban tried to split us apart and it won't work."

In an NBC News exclusive, Libya's President Mohammed Magarief tells NBC's Ann Curry that no mastermind has been arrested in the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi but that he believes it was a pre-planned act of terrorism involving elements of al-Qaida.

(AP) ? The NFL conceded Tuesday that a bad call cost the Green Bay Packers the game ? yet still upheld the Seattle Seahawks' victory.

While coaches, players and fans ? even athletes in other sports ? ripped the use of replacement refs, the league met with its locked-out officials Tuesday in an attempt to resolve the impasse.

Two people with knowledge of the talks told The Associated Press that the sides were meeting Tuesday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were not made public.

The NFL said Seattle's last-second touchdown pass of the "Monday Night Football" game should not have been overturned in the 14-12 victory ? but acknowledged Seahawks receiver Golden Tate should have been called for offensive pass interference before the catch.

Frustrations over the replacements have mounted through the first three weeks of the season and reached an apex Monday when a highly questionable call decided the outcome of a game.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, normally a soft-spoken player who didn't say much after the game, lashed out on his radio show a day later.

"First of all, I've got to do something that the NFL is not going to do: I have to apologize to the fans," he said.

Even President Barack Obama got in on the conversation Tuesday, tweeting: "NFL fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs' lockout is settled soon."

The controversy began on the final play when Russell Wilson heaved a 24-yard pass into a scrum in the end zone with Seattle trailing 12-7. Tate shoved away a defender with both hands, and the NFL acknowledged Tuesday he should have been penalized, which would have clinched a Packers victory. But it was not called and cannot be reviewed by instant replay.

Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings then both got their hands on the ball, though the Packers insisted Jennings had clear possession for a game-ending interception.

"It was pinned to my chest the whole time," Jennings said.

Instead, the officials ruled on the field that the two had simultaneous possession, which counts as a reception. Once that happened, the NFL said, the referee was correct that no indisputable visual evidence existed on review to overturn the touchdown call.

"The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review," the league said in a statement.

Saying there was no indisputable evidence, though, is not the same as confirming the initial call was correct. Simultaneous possession can be reviewed only on plays in the end zone.

On his weekly appearance on Seattle radio station 710 KIRO-AM, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made no apologies Tuesday, saying, "The league backed it up and game over. We win."

"Golden makes an extraordinary effort. It's a great protection. It's a great throw. It's a great attempt at the ball and he wins the battle," he said. "They were right on the point looking right at it, standing right over the thing and they reviewed it. Whether they missed the push or not ? obviously they missed the push in the battle for the ball ? but that stuff goes on all the time."

But Rodgers, in a reference to referee Wayne Elliott not seeing indisputable evidence, said: "I mean, come on, Wayne. That's embarrassing."

The NFL locked out the officials in June after their contract expired. Unable to reach a new collective bargaining agreement, the league opened the season with replacements, most with experience only in lower levels of college football.

Coaches and players began griping about the replacements in the preseason, but the frustration seemed to boil over in Week 3 this past weekend.

Scuffles after the whistle were frequent with players appearing to test the limits of the new officials and coaches were fined for berating them.

Las Vegas oddsmakers said $300 million or more changed hands worldwide on Monday's call. The Glantz-Culver line for the game opened favoring the Packers by 4?. Had the play been ruled an interception, Green Bay would have won by 5.

The call also found its way into Wisconsin politics, with Republican Gov. Scott Walker tweeting for the regular officials to return. Opponents noted that he seemed to be supporting the referees union after going after public employee unions last year, though Democratic state Sen. Jon Erpenbach added: "We're all fans, first and foremost."

IMF says banks skirt rules, financial system unwell

LONDON (Reuters) - Banks are getting round new rules intended to make a still vulnerable industry safer while countries are distracted by the continuing financial crisis, the International Monetary Fund said on Tuesday.

The IMF's latest Global Financial Stability Report said banks will adjust to new costs from tougher regulation to curb excessive risk taking, with deep-pocketed lenders likely to consolidate market share at the expense of smaller rivals.

The IMF regularly reviews how countries implementing financial reform pledges made by the G20 leading economies in 2009 at the height of the financial crisis.

It said that even five years after the start of the financial crisis in 2007 the global financial system is still not well and many rules have yet to bed down or even be agreed.

"Innovative products are already being developed to circumvent some new regulations ... The new banking standards may encourage certain activities to move to the nonbank financial sector, where those standards do not apply," the report said.

It cites new insurance and investment products like exchange traded products, customized derivatives and synthetic debt obligations.

"Alternatively, big banking groups with advantages of scale may be better able to absorb the costs of the regulations. As a result, they may become even more prominent in certain markets, making these markets more concentrated," the report added.

Policymakers have yet to tackle "shadow banks" such as money market funds, off-balance sheet vehicles and big broker dealers that handle credit but are less regulated than banks.

The G20's task force, the Financial Stability Board, will present recommendations in November to regulate shadow banks but there is already strong opposition to regulating money market funds further in the United States.

Reforms like Basel III to increase bank capital levels from January go in the right direction but the financial system is still too complex and too concentrated, the report said.

"The reforms have yet to effect a safer set of financial structures, in part because, in some economies and regions, the intervention measures needed to deal with the prolonged crisis are delaying a ?reboot' of the system onto a safer path."

Low interest rates may also be creating "new vulnerabilities" in the future.

There should also be a global discussion on whether some risky bank activities should be directly restricted rather than just making lenders hold more capital, it added.

Higher capital buffers at banks are associated with better results for the economy, as seen in emerging markets, but beyond a certain point very high buffers may drag on growth.

"A system that is too safe may limit the funds available for lending, and hinder growth," the IMF said, lending support to long-standing warnings from banks and some regulators.

Facebook Mobile Payments Via Carrier Billing (And Bango) Live In U.S., UK And Germany

Facebook Mobile Money CleanAnother step ahead for Facebook's strategy to make more money out of its mobile business: the company is accepting mobile payments for its mobile web service via carrier billing in the U.S., UK and Germany and it has now been confirmed that it is?Bango?powering the service. The option of letting users bill services like virtual gifts and game credits to their mobile phone operators was first announced in February 2012, and means that users do not need to use premium SMS or credit cards in order to buy these: it's a one-click system. Bango also provides similar services for BlackBerry's App World, Opera's Mobile Store and Google Play. It is also working with Amazon on a similar service. Bango says it will be rolling Facebook carrier billing out to further countries later in the year.

The North Face 50M: Week 7 | runner's rambles

Oops.? I am done with week 8, but gotta recap week 7 first!

Week 7 was a cutback week for me.? It worked out well because it coincided with a trip to my parents house for my sister in law?s baby shower (I am going to be an aunt!).? Plus, after 3 weeks of building my miles, my legs and body were ready for a down week.? I knew it was going to be hard to get as many trail miles in as I would like this week, but I did my best.

Week of September 10th

Monday
no running
1 hr yoga

I am still kind of struggling to find a natural way to fit in yoga and run.? Mondays are the day I like to do yoga, but?I am also?tired from the weekend?s long runs and usually I just want to sleep and not run!? This Monday in particular I was wiped out from the race the day before and knew I needed a day off of running.? Yoga felt so good though.? I figured, especially since it was a cutback week, that 2 rest days from running would work!

Tuesday
am: 8 mile road run
pm: 5 mile trail run

I met up with my running group at work for an 8 mile road run.?

8.0 miles/1:15:39/9:26 avg

IMG_2955

After work I hit up the trails for a beautiful evening.? After the first mile, my legs felt bouncy and fresh and I had so much fun running around the trails.? It?s like the dirt gives?them life.? I saw a ton of deer that night (including a buck!) and a bunch of turkeys!

5.5 miles/54:30/9:51 avg/569? gain

Wednesday
11 mile road run

I met up with my early morning friend for 6+ miles, then tacked on a few more to get my mid-week double digit run done.? I did not feel great on this run, but got it done.?

10.5 miles/1:40:30/9:33 avg

Thursday
7 mile trail run

So happy to be on the trails with my friends!

7.0 miles/1:16:27/10:55 avg/896? gain

After work I loaded up the pups and drove down to my parents house, and got?there pretty late.? I had plans the next morning?to meet up with my friend Jessica to run a new route so I got to bed pretty quick after settling down from the drive.

Friday
16 mile trail/road run

I picked up Jess around 8am, happy to get to sleep in a little bit and excited for a new route.? It?s so nice getting to run somewhere where you don?t have to get up super early to beat the heat.? It was a standard foggy day in Santa Maria and we drove out to Pt. Sal, a little hidden local gem.

I hadn?t been there since I was a kid, but have very strong memories of hiking there with my dad and brother and getting run down by my yellow lab as I tried to run around a big rock at high tide.? It looked a lot different than it did in my memories, but it was still gorgeous.

We had to run up hill for?a couple miles, where we got above the fog for a little bit.

IMG_2970

Then we had to run all the way back down to get to the beach.

IMG_2971

Pretty much the only way you can get to this beach is on foot.? It was high tide so we couldn?t get around the points on either end, but after some rock scaling we made it down to the beach.

IMG_2973

We ran on the sand (which proved to be kind of difficult) to the other end to check it out.? We also stopped to look at the tide pools (starfish!).

IMG_2974

It took a few minutes to figure out how to get back up out of the beach, but we figured it out.? We ran back up and over the hill again and were back at our car around 12 miles.??We decided to just add the other 4 on by running on the road out and back instead of running all the way back up again.? The road portion?ended up being downhill and tailwind for the first 2 miles, which meant uphill headwind on the way back.? Wee!

16.0 miles/3:09:18/11:49 avg/2234? gain

Saturday
~11 mile road/trail run

Baby shower day!? We had to?leave for the shower?pretty early, so I got up and was out the door at 6.? I ran to meet Jess again and we hit up some local trails at the other end of town.? My garmin died .2 miles into this run, so I just had to let it go because I had no time to deal with it.? It was about 2.5 miles to Jess and 2.5 miles back, and we ran about 6 together.? I was gone for 2 hours, so I called it 11 for the day.?

~11 miles/~2 hours

The baby shower was in such a fun, beautiful setting out in San Luis Obispo, and it was a perfect day for it.? We spoiled Erika and my little nephew to bed, and it so fun to be there.

DSC_0002

Erika, me and my nephew
DSC_0151

The day was filled with a lot of food, wine and family.

Sunday
rest

I stayed up late Saturday night and woke up early to make the long drive home Sunday, and was very thankful I?pre-planned this rest day.?

Totals for Week 7:
Miles: 58.1
Time: 10:16:24 (+ 1 hour yoga)
Elevation Gain: 4,452?

A solid down week heading into a big 3 weeks of running.

See Jess Run: What's Cookin' This Fall

It is officially fall in Minnesota -- my very VERY favorite time of year.?

And I couldn't ask for life to be better.

I'm writing this post from my new living room, overlooking some blue sky and changing leaves, thinking about what to make for dinner.? I just returned from an amazingly relaxing girls weekend away at this place -- where I pre-emptively celebrated my 35th birthday with women I've known for upwards of 25 years.? We were all sad for the weekend to end, but I got to drive home, happy to attend a baby shower for my cousin -- and see my aunt and cousin, in town from Boston.?

Friends, family and fall - what could be better.

This is my favorite time of year to cook -- it isn't so cold that you dread leaving the house to go to the store, yet it is cool and crisp enough to crank up the oven and indulge in savory cooking and comfort foods.

But when the seasons change I always have a week of confusion - it is no longer all about grilling, tacos, and meals you can cook without raising the indoor temps,?but that's all I've been cooking since March, so what to make for dinner?? It always takes me a bit to get back in the swing of things.

Luckily, today I'm working from home -- I've been away on a relaxing girls weekend since Friday, and while it might seem counter-intuitive to need a day to get back into the the swing of things, all that relaxation was exhausting!? So today is all about catching up on groceries, work, laundry, and life.?

Tonight's menu was inspired by one of my very favorite food bloggers, Jenna at Eat, Live, Run -- it is a go-to meal that I haven't made in months, and sounds delicious right now.

Other menu items this week include wild rice casserole, beef stew, and prosciutto wrapped chicken.

How about you?? What are your go-to meals for fall??

Leave your favorite recipe in the comments and help me fill out my week!

Off and running,
Jessica

China trade minister to visit Canada; could mention CNOOC bid

OTTAWA, Sept 23 ? Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming will visit Canada as Ottawa deliberates whether to approve a landmark US$15.1 billion (RM45.7 billion) takeover of oil producer Nexen Inc by state-owned Chinese oil company CNOOC Ltd.

CNOOC said it did not expect Chen to raise the sensitive takeover bid during talks with the Canadian government. Canada China Business Council president Peter Harder, however, said he would not be surprised if Chen mentioned it in a speech to his group on Tuesday.

Chen Deming: CNOOC bid hangs over visit. ? Reuters file pic

Although Canada is seeking substantial foreign investment in its oil and gas industry, the CNOOC move is raising concern inside cabinet, where some members are wary of letting a Chinese state-owned enterprise buy up domestic assets.

Industry ministry officials are looking closely at the bid to determine whether it is of net benefit to Canada.

Separately, Canada?s spy service said some foreign state-owned enterprises could pose a threat to national security. It did not mention China by name.

Canadian Trade Minister Ed Fast gave little away when asked about a planned meeting with Chen in the next few days.

?I do expect it will be a productive meeting as we move the Canada-China relationship forward,? he told reporters on Friday.

Nexen ? whose shareholders voted to accept the CNOOC deal on Thursday ? said it was unaware of Chen?s visit.

A spokesman for CNOOC said it did not expect Chen and Fast to discuss the bid ?because this is transaction between two commercial companies, not a government to government affair?. The Chinese embassy was not immediately available for comment.

China?s Ministry of Commerce is responsible for authorising investments of more than US$100 million by state-owned enterprises.

On the Canada China Business Council lunch in Toronto, Harder noted Chen had spoken about the CNOOC bid in a speech in Beijing.

?I think he would express the view that the transaction should be looked at as a business transaction and be seen on its merits and that China would hope that that would be the case,? Harder told Reuters in a phone interview.

He said that in Chen?s speech in Beijing, he had mentioned a foreign investment promotion and protection agreement Canada and China signed this month as well as China?s willingness to broaden economic relations between the two countries.

Canada says it needs C$630 billion (RM1.9 trillion) in investment in its energy sector over the next decade. It is also promoting the idea of oil sales to China.

Critics of the CNOOC deal point out that China is running a large trade surplus with Canada. They also complain Canadian natural resources companies find it hard to operate in China.

Canada?s spy service, in a report issued on Thursday, said some bids by state-owned enterprises to gain control off strategic sectors of the Canadian economy could threaten national security interests.

?The foreign entities might well exploit that control in an effort to facilitate illegal transfers of technology or to engage in other espionage and other foreign interference activities,? the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) said.

?CSIS expects that national security concerns related to foreign investment in Canada will continue to materialise.?

Pressed about the report, Fast said Canada always took security into account when negotiating economic deals. ?It would be our top priority to ensure Canada remains safe and secure,? he said.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said last month that public opinion would play a role in determining whether to approve the bid or not.

The official opposition New Democratic Party says it is concerned about a Chinese state-owned firm buying what they call a strategic Canadian asset. Nexen controls less than 5 per cent of the crude-rich tar sands in the western province of Alberta, one of the world?s biggest oil deposits, where its Canadian properties are concentrated. ? Reuters

Verizon Galaxy Nexus Finally Lands Jelly Bean Update

As Alton Brown is fond of saying, "your patience will be rewarded." Today, those of you with Verizon-branded Galaxy Nexus handsets (at least those that didn't run out and download an unofficial Jelly Bean) are finally getting your reward. Android version 4.1.1 (better known as JRO03O among the hack happy) is being pushed out OTA to Big Red customers, complete with the preemptive magic of Google Now in tow. If you haven't seen an alert yet, head to the About Phone section in your settings, and tap System Updates. Having recently been welcomed back to the AOSP fold, we'd have hoped for an update sooner, but it's still among the first wave of handsets to move to the latest version of Android. Now if only this would restore Google Wallet functionality. (Hey, a guy can dream can't he?) The complete announcement from Verizon awaits after the break.

Pouring a Strong Foundation for Your House | Home Improvement ...

Posted by Kantatasamsara on September 20th, 2012

The quality of a house?s foundation is what determines if it will be strong enough to stand the test of time. A strong foundation can last 100 years or more. A weak one can crack and shift allowing water seepage, insects infestations, and complete failure during an earth quake or other natural disaster.

The first step to ensuring a strong foundation is using good materials. Concrete begins with crushed rock, sand and cement, usually primarily consisting of limestone. These components are processed using specialized vertical conveyors and mixing equipment. If the proportions are off, or poor quality materials are used the concrete can be weakened and prone to crack.

Before the concrete mixture is poured, the site has to be readied for it. Space must be excavated, and allowance made for proper thickness of the foundation. If there will be a basement, egress window wells, plumbing, and electric wiring must be accounted for. Framing windows and stairs is an intricate process itself. To reinforce the concrete and increase tensile strength, steel rebar is placed in the concrete molds. Building codes require that all these steps be taken and this work will be inspected before the concrete can be poured.

When the site is ready for the concrete, it is normally poured straight out of the back of a concrete truck. Construction workers make sure it is poured evenly and tamp it down to avoid bubbles. This process can take several days depending on the size of the foundation.

Concrete foundations for buildings have been in use since the Roman Empire. But new processes and more efficient conveyors for bulk material make today?s concrete stronger than the Romans would have dreamed. And in the process this new concrete has allowed us to build ever taller buildings, bigger cities, and more secure homes of all sizes.

Texas Fights Against Hunger In The Elderly - Retirement Homes

What is Food Insecurity?

Texas has the 3rd-highest rate of food insecurity, defined as the inability for families to consistently afford enough food.

The Texas Food Bank Network says that the hardest hit population groups are senior citizens, according to Star-Telegram.

Texas Food Bank and Local Produce Growers Join Forces

The Texas Food bank Network works to reduce hunger, and encourages partnerships with local produce growers to provide healthier foods.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, is maintained by the agency.

Government Cuts Will Dismantle Food Stamps

The U.S. Senate plans to cut $4 billion and would not affect Texans much. But under the proposed $16 billion in Congressional cuts, over 300,000 people in Texas would lose food stamps, which would affect the state?s economy.

According to the food bank network, for every dollar spent on food stamps, $1.79 is put back into the economy. In Texas, 3.5 million people receive SNAP benefits, mostly children, the elderly and the disabled, officials said.
