The most common pain complaint I have heard this past winter is from my arthritis clients. Almost all of my clients with arthritis have told me that they have had to in increase their pain medication this winter due to increased joint pain and stiffness. The problem is that no one seems to know why? This has become such a common phenomenon in our geographical area this year that it was recently addressed on a news segment.? Here?s the deal?
Arthritis sufferers could tell you long before clinical research verified it, that yes, the weather does affect arthritis.
This year had far more fluctuations in the barometric pressure than usual. Clinical research, done by Dr. Parvizi, Director of Clinical Research at The Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson Hospital, states that there is pain fluctuation with the slightest change in barometric pressure.? When barometric pressure decreases, (which is when we get cold, overcast, wet or humid weather), arthritis pain increases. The amount of fluid in a joint and pressure inside a joint fluctuates with the change in the barometric pressure.? For arthritis sufferers, they feel these weather changes more because there is less cartilage to provide cushioning inside their joints.? ?Most patients report a significant increase in pain just prior to and during severe weather changes. Summer down pours and rainstorms are also included in these weather changes.
Ginger has long been used in traditional medicine to reduce inflammation in rheumatoid and osteoarthritis as well as joint and muscle pain.
We are now offering a customized arthritis massage treatment at The Spa at Cornerstone. This massage uses a combination of essential oils of ginger and lavender applied to affected joints and then wrapped in hot towels. Hot rocks in conjunction with massage are also used to help ease the pain and inflammation of arthritis.
