Green Blog: An Unlikely Welcome Wagon, Back in Suburbia

We returned from our year in the woods on Aug. 1 and are still in the thick of unpacking, resettling, registering the kids for public school, and catching up on doctor appointments. The big surprise was having to fix the myriad house problems that manifested in our absence, such as broken shower nozzles, a broken refrigerator shelf, a year?s worth of untrimmed hedges and mismatched touch-up paint unwittingly applied by our well-meaning tenants throughout the house. My shell of calm began to erode as I drove across the Piscataqua River Bridge ? Maine?s southern border.

Summer rush hour isn?t bad, but on our way to one appointment, we drove past down-at-the-heels urban neighborhoods the whole way.? But upon our return, in a dense residential neighborhood along a busy access road, I glanced left while stopped at a signal. There, running purposefully across a lawn, was a coyote ? big, skinny, grey, with a bushy tail. All we caught of coyotes in Maine was their scat.

The morning after we returned to New Jersey, my husband Craig called us all urgently but quietly to the front yard. We live on a dead-end street, across from a large park-like area overgrown with weeds and trees run amok. There stood a young buck, his antlers no more than a foot long. He paused for a moment and then stepped delicately into the thicket.

Later that day, returning home from running errands at Target and Home Depot, a groundhog waddled rapidly across our road toward the drainage pipe where he has lived since we moved here six years ago. He turned and squatted at his doorstep looking back at me with interest. His black eyes won the staring contest; I parked the car.

Birds thrill to be in our stone birdbath, littering feathers with abandon. The night air quivers with crickets. We have seen more wildlife in New Jersey in a week than we saw in Maine in a month. How do they cope with living amongst us? And at the risk of sounding like a misanthrope: How can I?

What I miss the very most about our year in the woods is privacy. Stepping out our front door in New Jersey, gentle suburbia notwithstanding, feels like jumping off a bridge into the societal maelstrom. People everywhere. Each interaction demanding a socially appropriate response. No downtime.

My antennae are weary.

I miss the time and space we had in the woods. As we gradually unpack the basement room jammed with all the belongings we did not bring to Maine, I find the volume of what we own to be staggering?yet we live in a modest-sized home. Since we?ve returned, I?ve spent at least half my time just looking after our belongings.

Finding space for things. Cleaning objects, washing clothes, doing dishes. Dishes! The kids have observed that it was less work to wash the few dishes we had in Maine by hand than it is to load the dishwasher here in New Jersey because we use so many more dishes each day?and we use them simply because we have them.

Since we have returned, I have not meditated. I have written in my journal four times. I have read one chapter of my current book. I have taken one walk. I think it is simply that it takes much more discipline here in populated places to just be, where so much else clamors for my attention. Perhaps seeking serenity in the woods is the easy way out.

I write this, my final Year in the Woods post, at my desk in a room at the back of our house. The window is open to the cool summer breezes. I hear the leaves whispering and the cicadas chattering, and feel the wind?s caress. Yes, I also hear the low rumble of a jet every few minutes (inescapable in a metropolitan area) and the ever-present drone of traffic from the nearby highways that close us in, and no, I cannot see the horizon. But?

I?m happy to reconnect with friends again, pleased to see the boys dive back into social lives, and feel like writing a fan letter to our washer, dryer and dishwasher. No more homeschooling, yippee! And curbside trash pickup, mail delivery, our great public library, and the ease of getting groceries and gas. What luxury.

But, I do not know what phase the moon is in today, nor where and when it will rise and set. The streetlights and the pale-red ambient light from the city flood the clouds from below in the dead of night. Whether the moon is full or not, its light will not keep me awake in New Jersey.

AMAZON: We're Sold Out Of The Kindle Fire - Business Insider

In a somewhat unusual press release Amazon announced that it sold out of its $200 tablet, the Kindle Fire.

In the release, CEO Jeff Bezos says, "Kindle Fire is sold out, but we have an exciting roadmap ahead?we will continue to offer our customers the best hardware, the best prices, the best customer service, the best cross-platform interoperability, and the best content ecosystem."

He appears to be saying Amazon will not make any more Kindle Fires, at least not the current model.

Amazon is hosting a special media event one week from today where it's expected to announce the next wave of Kindle Fires and e-readers. If Amazon is sold out of Fires, it would follow that the next tablets will be available for sale right away.

In Amazon's release it says it captured 22% of the tablet market in the U.S. over the last nine months. Its cheap tablet was appealing to people who didn't want to pay $400-$500 for the iPad. But Amazon now faces competition from Google with the Nexus 7, and Apple is reportedly going to release an iPad Mini which will compete with the Kindle Fire.

Amazon will have to make the next generation of the Kindle Fire significantly better if it wants to compete with Google and Apple.

Here's the full release:

Less than one year ago, Amazon introduced Kindle Fire?combining 15 years of innovation into a single, fully-integrated, end-to-end service for customers. Kindle Fire quickly became the most successful product launch in the history of Amazon.com, earning over 10,000 5-star customer reviews, and is the #1 best-selling product across the millions of items available on Amazon since its introduction 48 weeks ago. Today, Amazon announced that Kindle Fire is sold out, and that in just nine months, Kindle Fire has captured 22% of tablet sales in the U.S.

?We?re grateful to the millions of customers who have made Kindle Fire the most successful product launch in the history of Amazon,? said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. ?This has been a big year for digital products on Amazon?all of the top 10 sellers on Amazon.com since Kindle Fire launched just less than a year ago are digital products. Kindle Fire is sold out, but we have an exciting roadmap ahead?we will continue to offer our customers the best hardware, the best prices, the best customer service, the best cross-platform interoperability, and the best content ecosystem.?

Kindle Fire offers customers a vast selection of digital content?over 22 million movies, TV shows, apps, games, books, magazines and more?in one seamless, end-to-end experience, making it easy for customers to browse, discover and purchase. Since Kindle Fire launched last September, all of the top 10 products on Amazon?across all products?are digital products.

Record-breaking stellar explosion helps astronomers understand far-off galaxy

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Astronomers took advantage of the most distant supernova of its type to probe a galaxy some 9.5 billion light years away. The light from the exploding star, discovered by Pan-STARRS with followup spectroscopic observations by the Gemini North telescope and the Multiple Mirror Telescope, confirmed that the gas environment between the stars in the distant galaxy is "reassuringly normal.

An international research team, led by Edo Berger of Harvard University, made the most of a dying star's fury to probe a distant galaxy some 9.5 billion light-years distant. The dying star, which lit the galactic scene, is the most distant stellar explosion of its kind ever studied. According to Berger, "It's like someone turned on a flashlight in a dark room and suddenly allowed us to see, for a short time, what this far-off galaxy looks like, what it is composed of."

The study, published recently in The Astrophysical Journal, describes how the researchers used the exploding star's light (called an ultra-luminous core-collapse supernova) as a probe to study the gas conditions in the space between the host galaxy's stars. Berger says the findings reveal that the distant galaxy's interstellar conditions appear "reassuringly normal" when compared to those seen in the galaxies of our local universe. "This shows the enormous potential of using the most luminous supernovae to study the early universe," he says. "Ultimately it will help us understand how galaxies like our Milky Way came to be."

The discovery of the dying star in this distant galaxy was made using images from the Pan-STARRS1 survey telescope on Haleakala in Maui, Hawai'i. "These are the types of exciting and unexpected applications that appear when a new capability comes on line," said John Tonry, one of the study's co-authors and supernovae researcher at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Institute for Astronomy. Tonry adds, "Pan-STARRS is pioneering a new era in deep, wide-field, time-critical astronomy -- and this is just the beginning." After the Pan-STARRS discovery, spectroscopic follow-up studies using the Multiple Mirror Telescope in Arizona and the 8-meter Gemini North telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawai'i provided the data used by the team to probe the gas of the distant galaxy's interstellar environment.

The spectra revealed the signatures of a distant ultra-luminous supernova, and equally important, the unique fingerprints of iron and magnesium within the distant galaxy that hosted the explosion. The galaxy itself contains a very young population of stars (~15 to 45 million years old) with a mass totaling some 2 billon Suns.

Left: Portion of the Gemini spectrum of PS1-11bam from December 5 containing several interstellar absorption features of Fe II and Mg II at z = 1.566 (black). The error spectrum is shown in blue. For comparison we plot the GRB composite spectrum of Christensen et al. (2011). Right: A zoom-in on the relevant Fe II and Mg II lines demonstrates the similarity to GRB absorption spectra. Also shown is the [O II]3727 emission line at z = 1.567 from the January 1 Gemini spectrum.

The ultra-luminous supernova explosion belongs to a relatively recently-identified and special breed of exploding stars. They are some 10-100 times more luminous than their ordinary less-energetic cousins and unusually blue in color. While the process leading to their demise is still being explored, evidence points to the central core-collapse of a star having as much as 100 times the mass of our Sun. The collapse triggers an enormous explosion that blasts prodigious amounts of heavier elements through the star's enormous outer layers before expanding into space.

Traditionally, astronomers have used two techniques to study distant galaxies: They would either; 1) look directly for chemical elements leaving bright imprints on the galaxy's spectrum of light; or 2) search indirectly for dark signatures in the spectrum of an even more distant quasar, which reveals chemical elements in an intervening system that have absorbed light along our line of sight.

Recently, astronomers have supplanted these methods with another: seeking dark absorption imprints in the afterglows of "gamma-ray bursts" (GRBs); these brief flashes are the brightest and most energetic explosions in the universe, but they fade away within hours. The method is also limited by the need for expensive Earth-orbiting satellites to first detect and pinpoint a burst's location with precision before astronomers can make ground-based studies.

"The beauty of studying distant galaxies using ultra-luminous supernovae as a tool is that it eliminates the need for satellites and offers more time for study," says Alicia Soderberg of Harvard University. "A typical ultra-luminous supernova can take several weeks to fade away."

The study by Berger and his team provides the ?rst direct demonstration that ultra-luminous supernovae can serve as probes of distant galaxies. Their results suggest that with the future combination of large survey and spectroscopic telescopes ultra-luminous supernovae could be used to probe galaxies 90 percent of the way back to the Big Bang.

UN chief talks nuclear standoff, Syria with Iran

UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday held talks with Iran's leaders on its nuclear activities, the Syria conflict and human rights ahead of a summit at which Tehran aims to boost its international standing.

Ban met with the Islamic republic's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei after separately seeing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and parliament speaker Ali Larijani, Iranian media said.

After his meeting with Larijani, Iran's parliamentary news website quoted Ban as saying: "We have concerns about the human rights situation in Iran... Also I will discuss the nuclear issue with the Islamic Republic of Iran officials."

He said "Iran can play an important role in solving the Syrian crisis peacefully," adding that "the Syrian people have suffered a lot ... with more than 20,000 dying in the past 18 months."

Larijani, for his part, said "unfortunately, some big countries have acted adventurously in the region and have created disruption in the region like what we are witnessing in Syria."

Iran, the chief ally of Syria's regime, accuses the United States, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar of sustaining the armed revolt in Syria.

The UN chief was to leave on Friday, after attending the two-day summit of the 120-member Non-Aligned Movement.

The United States and Israel had criticised Ban's presence at the summit, even though the NAM represents nearly two-thirds of UN member states.

That has led Iran to seize upon Ban's attendance as a victory over its enemies and a sign it is not as isolated on the international scene as the United States has claimed.

Iran is locked in a deepening showdown with the United States and the rest of the UN Security Council over its disputed nuclear programme. It has also been threatened with possible Israeli air strikes on its nuclear facilities.

The West fears the programme is aimed at developing a nuclear weapons break-out capability. Iran denies that, insisting its atomic activities are exclusively peaceful.

The UN's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, is expected to release its latest report on Iran's nuclear programme this week -- perhaps coinciding with the NAM summit.

The report is likely to highlight Iran's expanding uranium enrichment activities -- which the Security Council has repeatedly demanded be suspended -- and Tehran's refusal to allow IAEA inspectors into a military site, Parchin, suspected of hosting explosives tests for nuclear warhead designs.

On Wednesday, the IAEA moved to create a special Iran "task force" to scrutinise the country's implementation of its nuclear obligations and its compliance with IAEA and Security Council provisions.

Access to Credit and Business Survival

A paper published last year by Traci Mach of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and John Wolken, formerly of that organization, shows how important access to credit is for small business survival.

tug of war

Using data from the Federal Reserve?s Survey of Small Business Finances, Mach and Wolken found that businesses that had less access to credit in 2003 were more likely to go out of business between 2004 and 2008. In addition, they found that measures of the businesses? access to credit were more predictive of company survival than were attributes of the business, owner, and market.

When this paper first came out, I thought the findings were self-evident. If lenders are any good at their jobs, then they should provide more credit to better companies run by more talented founders. Therefore, businesses that had better access to credit in 2003 should have been more likely to survive over the next five years than other companies. Presumably, they were the better companies.

But upon further reflection, I think this paper illustrates an important problem that central bankers, like Ben Bernanke, face. If the fraction of talented small business owners with good business ideas is roughly the same whether its 2008 or 2012, then this paper shows the importance of the getting public policy toward credit tightness correct.

When bank lending standards are looser, then the average business has more access to credit than when bank lending standards are tighter. That means that the average small company is more likely to survive in years when small business credit is easier to get.

That point highlights a key issue for the Fed chairman: Should the central bank encourage lenders to have easy or tough credit standards? If standards are low, then more businesses have access to credit and will survive over time. But if the businesses themselves are no better than when standards are high, then low standards means that the banks are propping up weak businesses with loose credit.

Because we don?t know how tight lending standards should be, the Fed risks making one of two mistakes in creating incentives for banks to lend money to small businesses. If it makes the banks maintain high lending standards that are too high, then it will cause many small businesses to fail, including some that should remain in operation. But if the Fed lets the banks maintain lending standards that are too low, then it is leading banks to keep alive small businesses that aren?t viable.

I?m glad I am not trying to get the job of Federal Reserve Bank Chairman.

Prednisone and diet | Recreation and Sports

August 28th, 2012 by Leave a reply ?

As with many drugs, there can be problems unless you follow a strict dietary regime. Although an article like this can give general advice, this is something you should discuss with your regular physician. Everyone is slightly different and your diet should be tailored to your particular needs to make sure your use of this drug is both effective and safe.

One of the first issues to confront is psychological. Many people discover that the use of corticosteroids boosts appetite. You will tend to feel more hungry, more of the time. This is something you must learn to ignore or resist. If not, you will find yourself putting on too much weight and facing an increase in fluid retention which can cause swelling of the joints. To add to the problems, Prednisone encourages a slight breakdown in the muscles protein. To compensate, you should eat a diet that adds more protein. A similar issue occurs with respect to calcium. Over the long term, your body will adjust and you may need to take a calcium supplement.

More generally, you should aim to reduce the amount of salt you eat. Ignoring the benefits to your heart, your body will need less salt while taking this drug. To achieve this, you will have to get used to food tasting differently. If you cook your own food, use less salt. It?s better not to buy processed food, and to avoid canned food altogether. This means focusing on a diet that?s rich in protein, i.e. lean meats, fruits, vegetables and grains. As an alternative to extra calcium, eat low-fat dairy products. You should add vitamins A and C, phosphorus and potassium, but this can be achieved by eating bananas, oranges, tomatoes, apricots and baked potatoes.

Prednisone is a powerful and effective drug but you must discuss all these dietary issues with you regular physician both before you start, and as you go on through the treatment. There should be regular monitoring to ensure you stay generally healthy with adjustments to the diet or the addition of supplements.

Circumcision's Bnefits Outweigh its Risks, a ... - Morocco World News

Morocco World News

New York, August, 28, 2012

According to the New York Times, the American Academy of Pediatrics has announced last Monday that a new research conducted in Africa has suggested that circumcision has many benefits. According to the findings of the study, circumcision can protect heterosexual men against H.I.V. Besides, its health benefits are said to outweigh its risks.

Though the academy ranked the numerous advantages of circumcision, it insisted that the procedure remains a family matter. In other words, it is up to parents to decide on it. The research findings come at a time when there is a heated debated in Europe and America about the utility of circumcision and the risks it may cause on the male body.

?We?re not pushing everybody to circumcise their babies,? Dr. Douglas S. Diekema, a member of the academy?s task force on circumcision and an author of the new policy, said in an interview. ?This is not really pro-circumcision. It falls in the middle. It?s pro-choice, for lack of a better word. Really, what we?re saying is, ?This ought to be a choice that?s available to parents.? ?

Opponents o the practice view it as a kind of crime and scandal. To them, it should be banned and abolished as no person has the right to touch, let alone remove a healthy body part of another person.

These findings are of great interest to public health policy makers inside and outside the United States. ?Of course, if male circumcision is performed safely in a medical environment, it can certainly complement other HIV prevention strategies and it could, therefore, reduce the burden of HIV/AIDS, ? experts say.
Besides protecting from these pre-mentioned diseases, circumcision has other benefits:

1. It can protect against cancer of the penis.

2. It can help the couple enjoy a better sex.

3. It can lessen urinary tract infections among babies.

People are expecting more debate to take place on the positive and negative effects of circumcision in the coming days. While some might argue that circumcision should only be performed when boys are old enough to make an informed decision whether they want or they don?t want to be circumcised, others have to wait for more research to prove the efficiency of this ritual.

Dropbox, the Popular Cloud Service For ... - Legal Productivity

Dropbox, the widely adopted file-hosting service that syncs documents to the cloud has responded to concerns about security by adding a two-step verification for all its accounts.

The verification process is optional but recommended by Dropbox and certainly recommended for lawyers and legal professionals.

In addition to their existing passwords, it requires users to enter an additional security code in order to sign in, or link a new computer, phone or other device. A text message containing the security code is sent to the user?s phone. Dropbox should make this additional security layer mandatory.

Dropbox already uses modern encryption methods to both transfer and store your data:

  • Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and AES-256 bit encryption
  • Dropbox website and client software have been hardened against attacks from hackers
  • Public files are only viewable by people who have a link to the file(s). Public folders are not browsable or searchable

The two-step verification process is being rolled out over the next few days for all accounts. You can find detailed instructions on the Dropbox help page.

The safety of client files is, and should be a concern for lawyers, and Dropbox has responded to security questions with high-level encryption and a two-factor authentication process.

Pioneering astronaut Neil Armstrong dies at 82

Pioneering astronaut Neil Armstrong dies at 82

It's a story that we hoped we'd never have to report. Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on Earth's Moon, has died at the age of 82 after complications from heart surgery three weeks earlier. His greatest accomplishment very nearly speaks for itself -- along with help from fellow NASA astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, he changed the landscape of space exploration through a set of footprints. It's still important to stress his accomplishments both before and after the historic Apollo 11 flight, though. He was instrumental to the Gemini and X-series test programs in the years before Apollo, and followed his moonshot with roles in teaching aerospace engineering as well as investigating the Apollo 13 and Space Shuttle Challenger incidents. What more can we say? Although he only spent a very small portion of his life beyond Earth's atmosphere, he's still widely considered the greatest space hero in the US, if not the world, and inspired a whole generation of astronauts. We'll miss him.

Home Improvement Remodeling | Vision Foster Homes

Article by Sears Home Pro

What to add and what not to add is the question every home owner seeking improvement will ask. Home improvement involves the reorganization and upgrading of the indoor and outdoor environment.

For a lot of home owners, the landscaping is really important. Landscaping influences the mood or aura of your home, a home with a pool and a fountain translates to a tranquil and serene environment. Moreover, a garden that is well kept with beautiful landscaping could be an attraction to homebuyers when and if you do eventually decide to put your home on the market.

Home improvements are a great investment in your house and you get a more comfortable and beautiful home in the process. There are two main methods of home improvement; you could choose to do a complete overhaul of your home or just do a remodeling project.

Home improvement remodeling is much less expensive than a complete overhaul and could be anything from changing your kitchen floors to changing the heating system in your home.

The kitchen is one of the more popular improvement remodeling projects. The areas for remodeling in a kitchen are vast and there is always something extra you could do to enhance the look of your kitchen and add more value to the home as a whole. Some kitchen improvement remodeling projects could be as complex as placing an island in a kitchen that had none before or could be simply refacing existing cabinets.

The bathroom is another area that is the focus of home improvement remodeling. There is just so much that can be done in a bathroom. You could simply change the tiles and there are many tiles to choose from including ceramic tiles or you could change the whole look of the bathroom; add an oriental or eastern feel to your bathroom.

You could also decide on an addition to your existing home such as a patio. You might want to change the look of our present patio or add a patio where one did not previously exist. Concrete slabs are quite common even though tiles of different materials are gradually gaining popularity.

Whatever form of home improvement remodeling you eventually decide to engage in, it is realy important to make sure that you are making the most of your money. This should be done by ensuring that the materials you are using are of the highest quality, to avoid your having to replace materials soon after the project is done. Furthermore, working with a qualified and reputable home improvement company is imperative to make certain that you are getting value for your money.

Home improvement means that you are adding value to your home, which translates as a prudent investment. You get the added advantage of living in a beautiful environment that affords you maximum comfort.

Facebook unveils faster apps for iPhone and iPad

SAN FRANCISCO ? Facebook has rolled out new iPhone and iPad apps rebuilt from the bottom up in a drive to boost speeds and give better performance.

The long-awaited move was part of the social networking giant's effort to appeal to the growing number of users accessing Facebook from mobile devices.

It was also an attempt to placate mobile users who for years have complained that the old apps were clunky and sluggish.

As more of its nearly 1 billion users begin to spend more time on Facebook via mobile apps than via computers, the company is stepping up efforts to improve the mobile experience, as it also feels the heat from Wall Street to make money from mobile ads.

"What they did here is what they should have done in 2008, the year after the iPhone shipped," said Ajay Juneja, founder and chief technology officer of Speak With Me Inc., an entrepreneur, like many in Silicon Valley.

After a few hours of trying the new iPhone app, Juneja said there was still room for improvement. But the app didn't crash or time out, and he could load photos and profiles far more quickly.

"Before, it was excruciatingly painful. It made me never want to use Facebook on a mobile device," Juneja said. "Now it's dramatically faster."

Mick Johnson, a mobile product manager at Facebook, said the new app is twice as fast.

When Facebook made its dismal debut on Wall Street in May, one of the main concerns about the business centered on its mobile strategy. Now the Menlo Park, Calif., social networking giant is playing catch-up.

The company has rewired itself to be "mobile first," meaning every product team is focused on the smaller screen, be it Apple or Android. And it is stockpiling technology and talent with its planned purchase of Instagram and other mobile start-ups.

More than half of Facebook's users access the service on their mobile devices, and the number is growing. Facebook had 543 million users who accessed the social network from a mobile device in June, up 67% from a year earlier. During the same period, the number of overall users rose 29% to 955 million.

Johnson said 7,000 different types of devices access Facebook each day.

"We get a lot of feedback from our users," he said. "People write in. People post. And people comment. We listen to all of that. We also use the app ourselves. It's the app I use every day. We wanted to fix all the pain points that we felt ourselves."

Johnson said Facebook took so long to roll out an app with better performance because "we were looking to make sure that everyone who had a mobile device would get a great consistent Facebook experience."

The new apps are only for Apple's mobile devices. But Facebook's Android app has also been widely criticized.

Johnson said that "interesting things are coming in the future for Android."

Pivotal Research analyst Brian Wieser said Facebook would keep updating its mobile apps, including for Android, to find the right balance between "the optimal consumer experience and one that can be monetized."

He said he's not worried with the pace of mobile innovation at Facebook, despite the tectonic shift to mobile in Silicon Valley.

"This is an iteration, and there will be another iteration and another iteration," Wieser said. "The vast majority of Facebook usage is still on the desktop and will be for a long time."

15 Ways To Have A Closer Mother-Daughter Relationship |

Post image for 15 Ways To Have A Closer Mother-Daughter Relationship

By?Margarita Tartakovsky, M.S.

Mother-daughter relationships are complex and diverse. Some mothers and daughters are best friends. Others talk once a week. Some see each other weekly; others live in different states or countries. Some spar regularly. Some avoid conflict. Others talk through?everything. And undoubtedly, there?s a hint of all these things in most relationships.

There also are ups and downs, no matter how positive (or prickly) the relationship. In her private practice,Roni Cohen-Sandler, Ph.D, psychologist and co-author of?I?m Not Mad, I Just Hate You! A New Understanding of Mother-Daughter Conflict, sees three primary complaints that daughters have about their moms: Moms try to parent them and are overly critical and demanding. From moms? perspective, daughters don?t listen to them, make poor choices and have no time for them.

Whatever your relationship with your mother or daughter, you can always make improvements. Here?s how to enhance your communication and connection and cut down on clashes.

1. Make the first move.

Don?t wait for the other person to make the first move, said?Linda Mintle, Ph.D, marriage and family therapist and author of?I Love My Mother, But? Practical Help to Get the Most Out of Your Relationship. Doing so inevitably leaves relationships stuck. ?Think about how you feel in the relationship and what you can do to change.?

2. Change yourself.

Many think that the only way to improve a relationship is for the other person to change their ways. But you aren?t chained to their actions; you can change your own reactions and responses, Mintle said. Interestingly, this can still alter your relationship. Think of it as a dance, she said. When one person changes their steps, the dance inevitably changes.

3. Have realistic expectations.

Both moms and daughters often have idealistic expectations about their relationship. For instance, kids commonly think their mom will be nurturing and present ? always. This idea can develop from an early age. When her kids were young, Mintle found herself setting up this unrealistic belief during their nightly reading time. She?d read a book about a mama bunny who rescued her son every time he ventured out and tried a risky activity, such as sailing or mountain-climbing.

4. Communicate.

Lack of communication is a common challenge with moms and daughters. ?In some ways they can be so close or feel so close that they believe that each of them should know how the other one feels,? Cohen-Sandler said. ?What happens as a result is they don?t communicate.? Or they communicate harshly, in ways they?d never ?dare speak to everyone else,? which causes hurt feelings that ?don?t go away so easily,? she said.

Because moms and daughters aren?t mind readers, be clear and calmly state how you?re feeling. Also, speak your ?mind in a very heartfelt but gentle manner.? Is your mom treating you like a child? Simply say, ?Mom, you?re not treating me like an adult.?

5. Be an active listener.

Active listening is ?reflecting back what the other person is saying,? instead of assuming you already know, Cohen-Sandler said. When you reflect back what your mom or daughter is saying, you?re telling her that she?s being heard and that you understand.

Also, listen ?to the feelings underlying the message,? which is often the real message, she said. If ?mom says, ?you?re acting like a doormat,? the daughter hears that as being horribly critical [and that she?s not good enough], but what the mom is really saying is, ?I feel so protective of you because you?re not protecting yourself.??

6. Repair damage quickly.

?One of the key principles in sustaining healthy and satisfying marriages is to repair damage quickly,? Mintle said. Healthy couples don?t avoid conflict. They realize conflict is inevitable and they deal with it head on. This applies to mother and daughter relationships, too, she said.

Not resolving conflict can have surprising consequences. ?If you don?t deal with your mom (and dad) by resolving conflict, you?re going to carry those same patterns into your future relationships,? whether that?s with your friends, partner or boss, Mintle said.

?Working it out with your mom,? however, is ?the best gift you can give to your daughter,? she said.

But pick your battles. If it?s not that important, ?Instead of being in a tug of war, just drop the rope,? Mintle said. Case in point: Years ago, Mintle?s mom told her to put a hat on her baby so she didn?t get sick. Instead of arguing about something so small, Mintle put the hat on and moved on.

7. Put yourself in her shoes.

Mintle refers to empathy as ?widening the lens.? She uses the analogy of a digital camera, which just offers us a snapshot. But a panoramic lens provides a much wider view, letting us see the object in a larger context.

If you?re a daughter, think of your mom as a woman with her ?own wounds and hurts,? who was born and raised in a different generation with different values and difficult family relationships and issues, Mintle said.

As such, address your mom or daughter?s feelings with empathy and offer a compromise, Cohen-Sandler suggested. If mom really wants to hang out, instead of saying ?Stop asking me, you know I?m busy,? say, ?I know how much you want to meet with me, and I wish I could but I can?t do it this week; can we do it next week??

8. Learn to forgive.

Forgiveness is ?an individual act,? Mintle said. It differs from reconciliation, which takes both people and isn?t always possible. Forgiving someone isn?t saying that what happened is OK. It?s not condoning, pardoning or minimizing the impact, she said.

Mintle views forgiveness as key for?well-being. ?I?m constantly telling daughters you have to forgive your mom in order to be healthy.? ?The power of forgiveness is really for the person who forgives.?

(On a related note, ?the better you can forgive, the better you can repair damage quickly,? Mintle said.)

9. Balance individuality and closeness.

It can be challenging for daughters to build their own identities. Sometimes daughters think that in order to become their own person, they must cut off from their moms, Mintle said. Or, quite the opposite, they?re so fused that they?re unable to make decisions without her input, she said. Both are clearly problematic.

But daughters can find their voices and identities within the relationship. We learn how to deal with conflict and negative emotions through our families, Mintle said. ?You don?t grow and develop and become your own person void of relationships.?

So how can you strike a balance between staying connected and still being true to yourself? ?You can take any position on any powerful issue and hold your own and not become defensive and angry. It?s this balance of connection and separateness,? Mintle said.

Mintle and her mom had a positive relationship but sometimes struggled with this balance. When Mintle was a well-established professional in her 30s, her mom would still tell her what to do. Every time she?d visit, she?d say, ?Linda, it?s getting late, it?s time for you to go to bed.? Mintle recalled being furious with her mom and unloading her frustrations on her husband. Then, she realized that she had to talk to her mom in a different way. The next night her mom said the same thing, Mintle used humor: ?Mom, if you hadn?t been there, I probably would?ve stayed up all night.? ?I need to back off, don?t I?? her mom responded.

Supernovae of the same brightness, cut from vastly different cosmic cloth

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Exploding stars called Type 1a supernova are ideal for measuring cosmic distance because they are bright enough to spot across the Universe and have relatively the same luminosity everywhere. Although astronomers have many theories about the kinds of star systems involved in these explosions (or progenitor systems), no one has ever directly observed one -- until now.

In the August 24 issue of Science, the multi-institutional Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) team presents the first-ever direct observations of a Type 1a supernova progenitor system. Astronomers have collected evidence indicating that the progenitor system of a Type 1a supernova, called PTF 11kx, contains a red giant star. They also show that the system previously underwent at least one much smaller nova eruption before it ended its life in a destructive supernova. The system is located 600 million light years away in the constellation Lynx.

By comparison, indirect observations of another Type 1a supernova progenitor system (called SN 2011fe, conducted by the PTF team last year) showed no evidence of a red giant star. Taken together, these observations unequivocally show that just because Type 1a supernovae look the same, that doesn't mean they are all born the same way.

"We know that Type 1a supernovae vary slightly from galaxy to galaxy, and we've been calibrating for that, but this PTF 11kx observation is providing the first explanation of why this happens," says Peter Nugent, a senior scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and a co-author on the paper. "This discovery gives us an opportunity to refine and improve the accuracy of our cosmic measurements."

"It's a total surprise to find that thermonuclear supernovae, which all seem so similar, come from different kinds of stars," says Andy Howell, a staff scientist at the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT) and a co-author on the paper. "How could these events look so similar, if they had different origins?"

A One in a Thousand Discovery, Powered by Supercomputers

Although Type 1a supernovae are rare, occurring maybe once or twice a century in a typical galaxy, Nugent notes that finding a Type 1a progenitor system like PTF 11kx is even more rare. "You maybe find one of these systems in a sample of 1,000 Type 1a supernovae," he says. "The Palomar Transient Factory Real-Time Detection Pipeline was crucial to finding PTF 11kx."

The PTF survey uses a robotic telescope mounted on the 48-inch Samuel Oschin Telescope at Palomar Observatory in southern California to scan the sky nightly. As the observations are taken, the data travels more than 400 miles via high-speed networks-including the National Science Foundation's High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network and the Department of Energy's Energy Sciences Network (ESnet)-to the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), located at Berkeley Lab. There, the Real-time Transient Detection Pipeline uses supercomputers, a high-speed parallel filesystem and sophisticated machine learning algorithms to sift the data and identify events for scientists to follow up on.

According to Nugent, the pipeline detected the supernova on January 16, 2011. He and UC Berkeley postdoctoral researcher Jeffrey Silverman immediately followed up on the event with spectroscopy observations from the Shane telescope at the University of California's Lick Observatory. These observations revealed incredibly strong calcium signals in the gas and dust surrounding the supernova, which is extremely unusual.

The signals were so peculiar that Nugent and his UC Berkeley colleagues, Alex Filippenko and Joshua Bloom, triggered a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation using the Keck Telescope in Hawaii. "We basically called up a fellow UC observer and interrupted their observations in order to get time critical spectra," Nugent explains.

From the Keck observations, astronomers noticed that the clouds of gas and dust surrounding PTF 11kx were moving too slowly to be coming from the recent supernova, but moving too quickly to be stellar wind. They suspected that maybe the star erupted, or went nova, previously propelling a shell of material outwards. The material, they surmised, must be slowing down as it collided with wind from a nearby red giant star. But for this theory to be true, the material from the recent supernova should eventually catch up and collide with gas and dust from the previous nova. That's exactly what the PTF team eventually observed.

In the months following the supernova, the PTF team watched the calcium signal drop and eventually vanish. Then, 58 days after the supernova went off, Berkeley Lab Scientist Nao Suzuki who was observing the system with the Lick telescope noticed a sudden, strong burst in calcium coming from the system, indicating that the new supernova material had finally collided with the old material.

"This was the most exciting supernova I've ever studied. For several months, almost every new observation showed something we'd never seen before," says Ben Dilday, a UC Santa Barbra postdoctoral researchers and lead author of the study.

A New Kind of Type 1a Supernova

According to Dilday, it is not unusual for a star to undergo nova eruptions more than once. In fact, a "recurrent nova" system called RS Ophiuchi exists within our own Milky Way Galaxy. Located about 5,000 light years away, the system is close enough that astronomers can tell that it consists of a compact white dwarf star (the corpse of a sun-like star) orbiting a red giant. Material being blown off the red giant star in a stellar wind lands on the white dwarf. As the material builds up, the white dwarf periodically explodes, or novas, in this case, about every 20 years.

Astronomers predict that in recurring novas, the white dwarf loses more mass in the nova eruption than it gains from the red giant. Because Type 1a supernovae occur in systems where a white dwarf accretes mass from a nearby star until it can't grow any further and explodes, many scientists concluded that recurrent nova systems could not produce Type 1a supernovae. They thought the white dwarf would lose too much mass to ever become a supernova. PTF 11kx is the first observational evidence that Type 1a supernovae can occur in these systems.

"Because we've looked at thousands of systems and PTF 11kx is the only one that we've found that looks exactly like this, we think it is probably a rare phenomenon. However, these systems could be somewhat more common, and nature is just hiding their signatures from us," says Silverman.
