Thursday's college roundup (volleyball, soccer, field hockey): CNU women return to volleyball Final Four with 40th victory

Christopher Newport beat UMass-Boston 22-25, 25-9, 25-17, 25-18 in an NCAA Division III women?s volleyball quarterfinal Thursday in Holland, Mich.

Alyssa Kidd had 49 assists and 16 digs to lead the Captains (40-2) to their 32nd straight win and second straight Final Four appearance. CNU was the national runner-up last season.

The Captains face Calvin of Grand Rapids, Mich., on Friday night at 7:30.

Calvin, getting good crowd support, beat Puget Sound 25-22, 23-25, 25-15, 25-10 Thursday. The Captains beat Puget Sound in straight sets earlier this year.

Hampton?s Krista Kraskura was a first-team All-MEAC selection and teammate Bibiany Fonseca made the second team.

Caitlin Cahill and Marlene Lichty earned first-team All-South Region honors. Goalkeeper Jamie Dowling, a Grafton High graduate, and Shelby Judkins were second-team selections.
