Thursday's college roundup (volleyball, soccer, field hockey): CNU women return to volleyball Final Four with 40th victory

Christopher Newport beat UMass-Boston 22-25, 25-9, 25-17, 25-18 in an NCAA Division III women?s volleyball quarterfinal Thursday in Holland, Mich.

Alyssa Kidd had 49 assists and 16 digs to lead the Captains (40-2) to their 32nd straight win and second straight Final Four appearance. CNU was the national runner-up last season.

The Captains face Calvin of Grand Rapids, Mich., on Friday night at 7:30.

Calvin, getting good crowd support, beat Puget Sound 25-22, 23-25, 25-15, 25-10 Thursday. The Captains beat Puget Sound in straight sets earlier this year.

More women?s volleyball:

Hampton?s Krista Kraskura was a first-team All-MEAC selection and teammate Bibiany Fonseca made the second team.

Norfolk State senior and Warhill High product Charlotte Armstead was a second-team selection. Armstead also earned second-team honors as a sophomore in 2010. ...

William and Mary's Dessi Koleva was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie of the Year and made the all-conference second team.

Teammate Shaylin O'Connell made the All-CAA third team. The awards were announced at a banquet before the conference tournament at first-place Towson.

Men?s soccer:

Maryland Baltimore County outscored host Old Dominion 4-2 in penalty kicks in the NCAA tournament?s first round after 110 scoreless minutes, giving an unsatisfying end to ODU?s last CAA season.

The Retrievers went 4-for-5 against ODU goalie Victor Francoz, while the Monarchs were 2-for-4. UMBC will play at No. 9 seed North Carolina on Sunday. ...

Will Bates? header of Scott Thomsen?s corner kick with about three minutes left in regulation lifted host Virginia past Lafayette 1-0 in a first-round NCAA tournament match.

The Cavaliers (10-6-4), unbeaten in their last seven matches, travel to 13th-seeded New Mexico for a second-round match at 9 p.m. Sunday.

This will be the second postseason meeting between the Lobos (16-3-1) and Cavaliers. In the 2004 tournament, U.Va. beat the top-seeded Lobos in penalty kicks at Charlottesville.

Field hockey:

Four CNU players were recognized by the national coaches? association.

Caitlin Cahill and Marlene Lichty earned first-team All-South Region honors. Goalkeeper Jamie Dowling, a Grafton High graduate, and Shelby Judkins were second-team selections.
